@Airi I assume you are playing the hell out of Mirage since his rework? My poor Pathfinder got nerfed :(

Nah it wasn't. I did research during my undergrad a couple of times for my to-be supervisor and as I neared the end he asked if I wanted to do a PhD. When I said yes, he came up with three potential topics for me and we went from there. The best part was, because I'm both fairly mathematically-minded and intrigued by maths for maths sake, he could give me some unique choices that he wouldn't typically offer, which led to some really interesting findings.

For example, at one point I was analysing polygonal tubes in pure torsion and noticed my results were indicating some special behaviour. So I went digging and found a paper from 1888 which, when I re-jigged the equations for my particular problem, gave a perfect match. I thought it wasn't a big deal - after all, the equations had been around for 128 years (at the time) - but when I presented it later that year (as an afterthought, since I'd discovered this after submitting the paper I presented) I was surprised to find that no one there had even heard of it!

To be honest, that was how the majority of the research in my PhD came to be; notice an interesting result and follow it through until, whoops, I've written another paper. Ahh, I miss that. (And thanks to whoever reads this for reminiscing with me :) ).
This is honestly the kind of stuff I'm much more interested in than most of my work--which, as I indicated earlier, is super simplistic and I don't get to exercise virtually anything I learned from school. But when I got my job, basically everybody from my class (so to speak) was going into grad school or just more schooling. It made more sense to get real world experience considering that.

I'm not saying I can't still learn things, obviously, or that I couldn't go back to grad school if I put my mind to it. Just that my work ended up being more closed-end than I initially expected.

Honestly, I had to reread "1888" a couple times. I've known a lot of mechanical engineering stuff has been around for a long time. It's still pretty surprising. Really great find on your part.

Since launch, really. The rework just finally validated my life's choices. :)

That's a shame. In my limited experience in industry (coming up on 3 years) I've had some opportunities to use the more advanced things I've learned, but for the most part it is very 'day-to-day', so the opportunities to go in-depth and do the more interesting things are still limited. I was the opposite when I finished my undergrad; everyone went to industry and I was the only one to go to academia, that I knew of.

Yeah I think I understand what you mean re your current work. I guess it's a question of whether you're happy with what your current work requires or if you want to try something different? (I feel woefully under-qualified to give any sort of career advice, so don't take too much from that haha).

Thanks! It was actually a lucky find; I had to buy Theory of Elastic Stability by Timoshenko and Gere to help with an entirely separate problem and, as I was going through it, I happened to come across a reference to the 1888 paper. Then, by some miracle, the paper was available for free online. It was from the Royal Society of London (I think) so it included reviews from the Society members and, let me tell you, it was strange seeing the full gamut of reviewer personalities present, from those who are hypercritical to those who are almost egregiously enthusiastic.

Changing jobs is actually something I'm more or less casually looking into, but only in part due to what I've already talked about. I don't know if my position is long for this world, or maybe whether I'm not long for the position and I'll get replaced by somebody the new boss favorites. There's been a ton of not-so-great or even fairly awful changes in just the last half year--only some of which due to the current events. So in short, no I'm not very happy with what I'm doing right now. No worries. :)

But Timoshenko--I should have guessed. I didn't use Timoshenko very much in school since they favored teaching mechanical engineering mostly from Shigley, but I do know of and have used a book by Timoshenko. Feels like a small world for me, lol. I suppose it isn't too surprising the paper was from the Royal Society (or do they call it Royal Academy? I honestly don't know). I've always loved getting to dive into math stuff, even when I knew it wouldn't have too much bearing on my focus. Ended up with a math minor for taking several additional math courses, like one on non-Euclidean geometry. Thank you for the stories!

The rumor is that there'll be a new map for Season 6, but tbh it might get pushed back due to the virus.

Someone tell me to get my work done instead of sitting here staring at my monitor like the code is just going to write itself.

That was significantly more literal than I'd have expected. Thank you.

You're not wrong. I often tell people that two thirds of my job is just being good at Google. But that just makes the stuff you have to figure out yourself that much more enjoyable. It's why I enjoy business app development so much more than something like web dev.

Well, yes, and that's generally what I do most. I should have made the distinction between web site development and web app development. Cookie cutter web site dev is mind numbing.

My primary team is currently doing the absolutely best of programming worlds (at least from my perspective), automating processes with no users touching it :P They get tickets or email about the results. I also work with a webappdev team and a salesforce team but more peripherally.

It's absolutely glorious to have something that just works and doesn't really have UI constraints.

So this has been a emotional past 4 days for me... All I can say is I'm both very proud of the citizens of my city but am frustrated by the city itself... I could type up a several page post on all this but I'm staying safe.

I've spent most of this weekend being overwhelmed by the violence going on across the country right now and seeing it in the literal backyards of many people I consider friends. If anyone here is in an area where protests are being held, please stay safe. And if you go out to protest, WEAR ANSII APPROVED EYE PROTECTION. Cops are aiming at faces with rubber bullets.

I was actually surprised to hear that there were nation wide violence. I guess I don't pay that much attention to the news but I expected it to more be in Minnesota I guess. I was actually surprised to hear about it in SD more from the standpoint that we have low populations than anything.

Stay safe everyone.

I've been really lucky here. The cops in this town had forewarning of the planned protests, and came out in uniform (but no riot gear) and sat and talked with the protesters and handed out water. Really glad of the community and hope it stays peaceful here. I stand behind the protesters, but not the looters/rioters. Stay safe everyone.

Yeah, my wife and I have been watching from here in NZ in astonishment. The violence, looting and rioting are pretty scary, and we don't condone them, but 100% behind the cause itself. I really am endlessly proud of anyone who is working to get their voice heard in a safe and responsible way. Hope y'all in the states are keeping safe.

Fully support the cause and San Diego's protests have been largely peaceful, though I believe there was a state of emergency called over the weekend to allow rural areas to set a curfew. I still appreciate being a ways out of downtown right now.

The two times I went to the protests this past week I have worn my old college lab goggles. I looked a tad ridiculous but I knew my eyes were safe.

Same (but for my area). We had someone show up to the protest over the weekend with a bow and a machete, %$#% be crazy.
