There will be a mono-white card that lets you repeatedly ramp Plains from your library onto the battlefield.
Looks like Verge Rangers is our Weathereder Wayfarerer...

Slightly worse Courser of Kruphix, although on the plus side your opponents don't get to see your top card.

Do I play Courser of Kruphix in lots of decks? Yes. So at the end of the day Verge Rangers is "good enough" to play for card advantage.
Still obviously best paired up with the play additional land cards in Green.

Flawless Maneuver looks like an all-star to me. Zero cost protection, I'll find a slot for it in a lot of my white/X decks, that probably don't have blue.

Verge Rangers is intriguing. I run Courser of Kruphix in a few decks, and it's a solid card - not amazing, but I'm generally happy with it. However, when we move it into White (which has a lot less ways to naturally hit land drops), remove the clause that lets your opponents see what you draw, and remove the enchantment type (so it doesn't die to Bane of Progress or the relevant mode of Austere Command), it looks a lot stronger. Will definitely want to give it a test. Losing the lifegain is a small ding, but first strike also makes it a better body for getting into combat.

Species Specialist also looks pretty sweet. Pretty unique in that it triggers off your opponents' creature too, and nontoken creatures. I suspect I'd name Human most of the time (almost like they're the most common creature type), which also lets it trigger off itself, which is nice. Interesting to compare and contrast with Grim Haruspex and friends.

I feel like the "As long as an opponent controls more lands than you" is a bigger downside than you think. You will never literally be able to exceed your opponents on lands.
If you play first then you end up missing a turn of action as well (unless opponents have ramped).

Deflecting Swat goes in probably all my Red decks, as I focus my decks around the commanders normally and redirecting targeted removal at no cost is really good.
So good in my Greven deck, auto include.

Just for funsies, what do people think the blue and black of the "free with commander" cycle will be?

The super boring answer for blue is counter noncreature spell. That would be reeeallly strong though. Maybe give all your stuff hexproof? Give your creatures hexproof and untap them. Idk.

The black one seems REALLY hard to guess because they've all been defensive plays and black doesn't usually DO defense. So my guess is that it's something like "sacrifice a creature and draw 2". You can't kill my creatures. I kill my creatures.

If Verge Rangers is this card, I'll be a bit sad. You'd think they'd have learned their lesson about false advertising with the Happily Ever After debacle. I always understood ramp to be something different than Courser of Kruphix :P

If WotC cared about false advertising, they would have learned that lesson sometime around Dark Ascension. Anyway, anyone else think Nethoi is really good in Doran's 99? It says "total power", so you can get as many 0/Xs as you want.

I'm not huge on the sultai or jeskai pairs, but the temur one is cool. Ramp out the doggo, smash some face, then when he gets sent to a farm upstate you play his partner and start casting a bunch of bonus spells. Sounds fun to me, and the flavor is really excellent imo, really love that. Probably more fun to play than to build, though.

I don't like the Temur one due to the fact that Haldan doesn't function by himself. The Sultai patners feels very weak and underwhelming.

I like the Jeskai ones the most as the potential for doing whacky stuff.

I thought that about verge rangers but I don't think it is any good at all in green because it requires you to be behind and if you're playing extra lands you're not behind.

I think it's best thought of as a slow card draw / topdeck manipulation effect in non-green decks. If you think of it as:
2W
3/3 first strike
at the beginning of your first main phase flip a coin and if you win draw a card
It'll be pretty close. If you have anthems and/or equipment that can make use of the large first strike body it's reasonable.

White won't scoff at a decent body with a card advantage effect, but it's really pretty medium overall unless you care about your topdeck.

I care about my topdeck in Daxos, and yet I don't care at all for this new guy :P A proper slow deck with land drop focus already feels like it has enough tricks to not have to depend on a Courser.

Is that real? It looks fake. Is it a mock-up from a foreign language version or something?

EDIT: yes, that's what it is. Card appears to be real, although I can't translate russian so I just have to assume the wording is correct.

Pretty insane. Definitely putting that in some decks. I now think the blue one being "Counter target non creature spell" is pretty damn plausible.

Honestly, the UB partner is pretty underwhelming but the green part isn't bad. Stick in some lil' edric-style unblockables and the damage starts to scale up pretty quick. Then throw in some thassa's bident effects and you're rolling in it. You don't even really need to cast the UB partner tbh.

Temur pair is awesome and you're wrong.

Yeah, I really thought hard about it in Ephara and like.. if I want to draw a few cards slowly for 3 mana there're a lot of options, even on bodies. Hell I could play mulldrifter.

It really needed to be something else. It's a nice attempt but I don't think I'll play it :(

No, you're wrong for dissing the Jeskai patners(IT HAS A BIRD SHARK) and praising the Temur one >.>

Haklan is worthless without his dog. making the pairing mandatory. Thats a minus to me.

The Green patner from the sultai one atleast works in other decks, tough i think hes still incredibly underwhelming, but works.

Akim makes the cycling deck's legends a kind of jank synergy that I really appreciate. It seems like the kind of legend you want...for last year's populate deck, if you don't want the green? Can I like it without ever wanting to run it?

It's also a very efficient body.

I expect his ideal location would be in a RW aggro deck, since he provides beatdown power and value in one package. You can hit your land drops and keep drawing gas, just what aggro needs to do to keep the pressure on.

Not insane but definitely nice.
RedCheese wrote:Haklan is worthless without his dog. making the pairing mandatory. Thats a minus to me.
It's not like you need to have them out at the same time. You need to (well, should) play the dog first, but unless it gets removed instantly you start banking value for haklan. Maybe you play haklan, or maybe you just keep putting money in that bank until your opponents kill the dog, then play haklan and start spewing value.

Bird shark wants me to play wheels. I don't want to play wheels. I don't like giving my opponents cards.

None of the partners look interesting to me at all; the jeskai one is hamfisted curiosity combo pandering, and the rest are regression to normal stats that make for pretty poor commanders.

It's pretty typical wotc really, find a formula that everyone loves cos it's pushed then make it cost more mana and have worse abilities next time you do it and say hey look we gave you more of what you asked for.

The battlebond partners were a bit of the same though at least they had fairly interesting abilities that tended to work okay alone (virtus and gorm were very cool in particular). These are just ability collages on overpriced bodies for the most part.

Doubt any of them will catch on really except maybe the wheel guys and even those are just..bleh, boring?
