Hermes_ Sounds like you're having a rough week. Good luck getting healthy and hope you're doing well.

How does Simpsons hold up if you weren't watching from the beginning/growing up with it? I think I've seen a couple episodes, the movie a while back, and a handful of assorted other stuff but it was never a regular thing for me. Any merit to going back to it now outside of the cultural touchstones?

As an aside, I'm being surprised by UPS right now. Ordered some computer parts Sunday and they're supposed to be delivered today with the slowest shipping option.
I've watched literally a crap ton of it over the years. Honestly I really really wish they had quit while they were ahead, because anything past seasons 9-10 are pretty underwhelming.

In terms of how the golden era seasons 5-6 to 8 hold up, I personally think a lot of it is still pretty hilarious. I think at its zenith it holds up better over time than the closest comparison, which is probably Family Guy. That's just my opinion though. I like family guy, but I think a lot of the 'best of the best' is still pretty topical, and has kind of aged worse. Simpsons is guilty of this too, but the touchstones in its best of the best are most enduring. And that's the beauty of the show; I got into it as a kid of like, 8, and found it pretty funny. Rediscovered it as a teenager/more adult person and found a whole different layer of comedy in the same show. There was a depth to the comedy there that you don't see in a lot of other stuff. That's gone now, their hey day has ended, but at its best it was pretty damn transcendent.

Piggybacking on toc, the first few seasons suffer from mediocre animation quality. And despite some of the episodes being topical, they don't feel dated, IMO. Some are subtle parodies of movies, like Pulp Fiction or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (I think that's what it was called?). Most Halloween special episodes are also parodies of pop culture as well.

Of course, I grew up watching it since I was Bart's age, so my opinions are biased.

You lucky so and so, my Chains seems to have gotten lost somewhere in transit. How long did they take to reach you? That said, I guess transatlantic delivery times versus literally just hopping over the canal is kinda different.

Mine just arrived yesterday (11 days after the shipping email), so it might not be lost? They are packaged pretty well.

Yeah, I've got respect for cards that have done hard yards and got battered in the process. Those cards are troopers. I've got a couple Dark Ritual|Ice Ages that have seen some sh!t, I just can't bring myself to get rid of them though. I remember jamming then when I was like 11, first getting into the game.

damaged-aggassault.jpg
A buddy of mine had a bunch of crap that was mostly horribly damaged he sent us to sell for him at the GP, we sold most of it but some of the pieces were too thrashed like this cat peed on aggravated assault. I rubbed it with vinegar until it stopped smelling, dried it, and then sharpied the torn off parts.

I would probably not bother these days, but I had a lot less expendable income for cards at the time :P

Cat peed on? Damn, and I thought my cards had been through the wringer. Mine are mostly just grubby from teenager junk food/oily handness and dinged up around the edges. I have a couple of Hammer of Bogardan|Mirages in a similar condition to the Rituals. They're pretty well good for nothing these days, but y'know, nostalgia and sentimentality and feelings and junk.

It's sadly not my only card that once smelled of cat urine, but none of mine got that way the hard way, all second hand :P

There's a whole sub on reddit devoted to messed up magic cards last I heard, can't remember the name. You wouldn't believe the stuff people do though.

In my early days as an EDH player, I was an aggressive bargain hunter. I was entertaining the thought of building Zuberi, and Urza's Incubator seemed like a sensible include. However, I was not willing to front whatever few euro the going rate was, so I scoured the offers until I found a MagicCardMarket listing proclaiming the card was mauled by a dog. Thinking little of it, I went for it anyway as it was about the tenth the expected price. The seller wasn't kidding - there's a gawping hole in the middle, and the entire top side of the card is clearly gnawed on. The whole thing is very flaky, likely as a result of having been soaked in dog drool and then dried back up. I kept the card for fun, and it still lives in my trade binder. I have actually had trade offers for it, which I've turned down for mindless sentimental reasons.

I never built the griffin deck this was supposed to go into :P

My absolute favorite Simpsons episode is when Bart gets an unlaminated driver's license, and he and his friends try to drive to the 1984 Worlds Fair. So much gold in that episode, but the bit where they pick up the hobo is the best.
Yeah, that was one of those jokes I didn't get when I first saw it, and was then hilarious seeing it at the age of 17 or so.

If ever there was a post that deserved the comment 'pics or it didn't happen', it's this one. I'm vicariously proud of your Incubator for hanging on in there like a frickin trooper.

I've got a pretty good stock of beat up cards that I don't pull out much anymore. I think the most impressive beat up one is an Underground Sea with a hole through it that I picked up sight unseen for a fraction of the going price at the time. It's not too bad from the front unless you move a torn piece, then you can see daylight. I've toyed with the idea of getting it altered to add some structural integrity a few times.

Popped open the old laptop, found an archival pic of the thing I circulated among my disbelieving friends in 2015. Ahh, memories.

Anyone have any ideas on how to make my cube even weirder and worser (within the restrictions)? Link in sig.

 holy poo. Like I don't even want to know how Vizzerdrix would be too good for a cube. It would ruin the magic.

Y'all should check out this jumbo commander video. I'm generally not a fan of listicles and "Top 5/10/500" style videos, but this is quality stuff and someone probably needs to hear it. #1 makes me think he's been reading @pokken posts
