I vividly remember Slide decks in Onslaught Standard and Extended as well, and they were very fun to play... but it's very tough to play them properly without multiple copies of the Onslaught cycling lands. They were the glue that held the deck together. No other cycling card comes close to the efficiency. And only being able to play 2-3 total (depending on your color identity) in a 99-card deck is crippling. Well, that plus only being to run one copy of Slide and Astral Drift each, plus color identity restrictions on other cards, like Lightning Rift (which, as others have pointed out, has a different, albeit key support, strategic use). Slide just isn't meant to be a deck in Commander I think. Since they printed Drift, I've thought about trying, but they are obviously disinterested in making the deck work in Modern, let alone Commander (which would require multiple new Slide-like effects or a Slide commander).

Think this had more purpose back when mana burn was a thing. Now it's probably more of a very mild mild chaos piece than anything.
Let's not kid ourselves, this card is hot garbage.
But, part of it appeals to me; I really like cards that persuade or force players to go all out in terms of attacks or spending resources, like Angel's Trumpet, Total War and War's Toll.
I wonder if there are enough cards to play along a theme of "Use it or lose it!"

Rumpy5897 I like how it forces you to tap creatures and artifacts differently so you don't have to risk phasing out. Kinda an interesting if half ass answer to winter orb if they don't have a tap mechanism.

I'm not sure if there are enough cards but right now I can think of Citadel of pain and Oracle en-vec kind of fitting in the theme. There are quite some red effects forcing attacks, too.Sinis wrote: ↑4 years agoLet's not kid ourselves, this card is hot garbage.

Norritt. The card you're thinking of is that and Nettling Imp. :DHenlock wrote: ↑4 years agoI'm not sure if there are enough cards but right now I can think of Citadel of pain and Oracle en-vec kind of fitting in the theme. This is one of the first cards I was exposed to when I first started playing. I loved the flavour then and it's still kinda cool now. Still, hard to find a use for. Maybe in an Emmara 2.0 deck? Maybe, if you squint real hard.
I do like cards that have the use it or lose it vibe, so there's that. I just think it's been done a little better since this was released.

Well, it can tap artifacts and creatures too. And it keeps Gideon tapped down. But that's about it.
Thanks to Feyd_Ruin for the avatar!
If I'm reading it correctly, it combos with Strionic Resonator - copy the trigger, use it to untap Resonator and your lands, repeat for infinite mana. Requires an instant speed mana sink though, since this is during your upkeep.
Could also be interesting if you have ways to tap your own creatures to minimize the downside, such as vehicles or tap abilities.
Add in Eon Hub to make things even more miserable.

Shivan Hellkite ought to do the trick.Mookie wrote: ↑4 years agoIf I'm reading it correctly, it combos with Strionic Resonator - copy the trigger, use it to untap Resonator and your lands, repeat for infinite mana. Requires an instant speed mana sink though, since this is during your upkeep.

This is an interesting piece to nullify Seedborn Muse. Can't untap during other players' untap steps if they don't have one.
E: Also Unwinding Clock and similar effects. It's not a great card itself, but it is a way to help force people back into only having one effective turn per cycle.

That's not a kill though, it's just a mana battery. You've got unlimited untaps here, you need to capitalize with more than a mana battery.Hermes_ wrote: ↑4 years agohmmm Omnath, Locus of Mana maybe?3drinks wrote: ↑4 years agoShivan Hellkite ought to do the trick.Mookie wrote: ↑4 years agoIf I'm reading it correctly, it combos with Strionic Resonator - copy the trigger, use it to untap Resonator and your lands, repeat for infinite mana. I believe the intent with Omnath is to get around only having infinite mana during your upkeep. Alternatively, just one-shot someone with an arbitrarily large Omnath.3drinks wrote: ↑4 years agoThat's not a kill though, it's just a mana battery. I'll throw out Rocket Launcher as another potential finisher, with Goblin Cannon as a reasonable backup.
I suppose that Sands of Time also serves as tech for 'doesn't untap during your untap step' cards such as Goblin Sharpshooter and Traxos, Scourge of Kroog. Alternatively, put it in a sand tribal Hazezon Tamar deck?

It's not just that, it's that Omnath only stores while if you assembled this combo, you're able to generate any colours of your colour identity. Locking your combo to single colour is a pretty big detriment, barring yes, Rocket Launcher and it's ilk.Mookie wrote: ↑4 years agoI believe the intent with Omnath is to get around only having infinite mana during your upkeep. Before we change card for the day I would also like to mention that Sands of Time also works as a hilarious disruption piece to someone who has phased out via Teferi's Protection or other such shenanigans. If they don't have an untap step then their permanants don't phase back in. The card starred in my Vaevictus deck when Teferi's was very popular in my meta. It stopped being as popular wh nthey realised they could lock themselves out of the game accidentally.
