Hi all,
my son wants to build a decently workable Nicol Bolas themed legacy deck - but not a commander deck; a regular 60 card deck under legacy rules with as nicol bolas as the central theme. I'm not sure what to suggest, so I would really appreciate some ideas what would you guys recommend?
Many thanks in advance! :)

Well that sounds sort of casual, regular Legacy decks would probably eat it most decks based on it alive at a tourney.

Why Legacy rules specifically? Just for specific Legacy cards? Unless there are some in mind then there is no need to go into one of the more powerful formats- Bolas will be Pioneer legal, if you mean his latest incarnation as a planeswalker- and the less powerful the format the more chance of being alive to cast him., and you don't have to spend hundreds on dual lands.

If it is for the original Legends or more likely chronicles Bolas card- don't bother being Legacy, just play it as freeform/casual and tell people it is a Bolas deck- the card is pretty unusable in Legacy,

If you want to play with Bolas then the only way of doing so in Legacy is Arena Rector in a Nic Fit deck, as Bolas can be fetched in off the rector. Go to mtg top 8 search last two years/Legacy and arena rector and you can see the sort of lists.

Hi drmarkb, many thanks for this clear and very useful feedback.

Indeed I have probably awkwardly posted my question and I agree with you 100% that a Bolas-themed deck would never really be a competitive deck against top-tiers in Legacy. My question was indeed intended more towards building a freeform/casual deck but the reason why I posted the question here is that I kind of had "Legacy" quality cards in mind to try to support building the deck. Just to be able to give is some extra "umph"... So not limiting ourselves to modern/standard but giving some extra space with cards allowed to construct a deck that can be fun and can perform well.

With regard to which bolas incarnation... again with the idea in mind that this is not building a tournament-competitive legacy deck but as-goog-as-can-be bolas themed deck with allowance of Legacy-strength cards to support him, I would happily include several incarnations of it just to make it fun. My son loves Bolas as a protagonist of a story, so we'd like to build something that could be played well with this in mind.

With this extra explanation, would you have any other suggestions how to look into this further? I will certainly study the Arena Rector decks - many thanks for suggesting that! :)

I would probably use arena rector shells- basically
4 Cabal therapy
4 veteran explorer
4 arena rector
2-4 thoughtseize
some swords to plowshares, abrupt decay, assassin's trophy

And although the best engine for rector decks involves evolutionary leap, disciple of bolas would fit your theme.

and since bolas is ridiculously coloured
4 arcum's astrolabe + basic snows, they can be fetched via veteran explorer

From there cheat in the Bolas Planeswalkers.
Remember rector hits the bin and a trigger is created, so the rectors can get surgical extractioned. To prevent this ground seal works well.
