Say what you will about green's BS this set, but solitude is no slouch. But does it pass the phelddagrif test?

Yeah, I'm pleased with solitude myself. Solid effect on a good body, pretty decent card.

Esper Sentinel is excellent.

Sterling Grove is a very nice reprint for enchantress decks.
I have 68 active EDH decks, with more in progress. I don't consider this a problem. Do you?
I am also one of those barbarians who enjoys winning by turning creatures sideways.

Esper Sentinel looks excellent, from a color pie perspective at least - we've been requesting that Rhystic Study be moved into white for years. This is... significantly more limited than Rhystic Study or Mystic Remora though.
  • It only triggers once per turn per opponent, which makes it weaker against opponents casting multiple spells per turn.
  • It only triggers for noncreature spells, making it worse against creature-based decks.
  • It only costs one mana if it isn't pumped, making it pretty easy to pay the tax.
  • As an artifact creature, it's also significantly more vulnerable to removal and board wipes.
....still, it's certainly a good start. If you have any ways to pump it (and thus make your opponents pay more tax), it looks much better. Also works well if you have artifact / creature synergies (it's Trinket Mage-able!).

Solitude is pitch-Swords to Plowshares. Not broken, but perfectly reasonable. A 3/2 flash lifelinker isn't a bad body either.

Solitude apparently breaks my proposed theme of replicating the effects of 3-mana common spells, but Crib Swap suggests that a 3-mana common with the same text as Swords to Plowshares would be a viable common.

I await the green one being Cultivate and being instantly busted.

The fact that it costs 1 and has no upkeep is huuuuge though. What's the most common t2 plays? Rampant growth, signets, talismans etc. It's not unusual for 2-3 players to do that. Remora forces you to either forgo your own ramp or sacrifice it, and rhystic can't capitalise at all.

I think it's really strong tbh. And in that sweet spot of not quite strong enough to eat removal, I suspect.

Ever since Commander Legends I've been wanting to build an artifact creatures deck so I'm thrilled to see so many spicy artifact creatures in MH2 and Strixhaven! I love the design of Esper Sentinel. I also just saw a bit of the announcement stream where they had Aaron Forsythe talking about how white not being able to draw was a flaw in the color pie. Really happy about the direction white and boros are going in now.

Solitude seems so good but I am having a hard time imagining a cut for it. So many great cards out there :)

I might jam it in Breena where it's another nice removal spell.

Esper Sentinel is perfect. Both easy and hard to remove. An artifact creature dies to a stiff breeze, but white can recur and copy it for days. Osgir is going to make two of them. Blue is going to get jealous and blow a Phyrexian Metamorph on copying it.

Also so easy to put a few +1/+1 counters on the thing with modular or a dozen other mechanics and it's more of a Mystic Remora.

Players - "We want good white draw!"
WOTC, 30 years later - "Here, have this and shush."

Just you. Sorrow's Path doesn't give "bands with other", so I'm not interested.

Suddenly; this set's day of supporting sort of weird deck mechanics!
Harmonic Prodigy is even more ways to double trigger Krark, the Thumbless. They're printed a lot of support for that type of deck recently. I'm sad Zada, Hedron Grinder is not a wizard.

I was playing a game of my '4-color 1 drops edric' deck last night while Lonis, Cryptozoologist was spoiled, and am glad to see more clue support with Bygone Bishop.

Academy Manufacturer is a type of cross-token support that doesn't happen often. Even if your deck only cares about permanent count (Warp World), it's the first token tripler. On that topic: Glimpse of Tomorrow is nifty, although probably just a "wrath me soon" warning.

Esper Sentinel is probably amazing draw engine in Osgir, the Reconstructor, both by copying or increasing the power.

And of course, having Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth next to Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to Mind Bend and win with Karma type effects. Ironically, the deck I'd add that to is wru, so they're both "off color".

Also, eternalize on Eternal Witness and Eternal Dragon. I wonder who's next....

I think it needs some level of flicker or reanimator support to be worthwhile, and being CMC 5 and power 3 makes it awkward for white's own recursion. In those decks, it can be great, but the flexibility of also being a flash Ravenous Chupacabra is not worth two-for-oning yourself for spot removal.

Honestly, my guess for the green one is that it's going to be the +1/+1 counter one people were joking the white one would be. Now that we've got 3 of the 5, we can see they're all removal or reactive, which doesn't fit with Cultivate. In fact, of green's suite, basically only fight and pump qualify as those, and I think they're moving away from fight on ETB creatures (it would also be awkward on an evoke creature). I think Red's is likely to be a flametongue kavu variant, probably with "or planeswalker" added, and will be the other sorcery speed card of the cycle.

See, I was thinking red's would be an Act of Treason, as that is a 3-mana common spell that is an effect iconic to the color.
In order for green's to be a combat trick, that would require it to have flash. While there is nothing restricting green from having flash, I find it less likely that they would make 3 of the 5 have flash, as the cycle would feel even more same-y. I don't honestly think it'll be land search, as the resource advantage would be out of line with the ones we've seen. I could see it creating a 2/2 token, or if they're being generous, two 1/1 tokens.

…is enchantress an archetype in Modern? Those are some good GW enchantress reprints so far. Wonder if they will get us a Femeref Enchantress variant or generally something that plays with sacrificing/going-to-GY enchantments in those colors.

Years ago I played a GW enchantress shell with Utopia Sprawl and Courser of Kruphix and it was pretty damn decent, it looks like all the tools are there now tbh.

It's never gonna be top tier but I think you could make a good deck now.

The main missing piece is Wild Growth - if we see that it's probably gonna be real good actually.
