Ok let's talk Chatterfang the at long last awaited squirrel tribal legend
I am basically 100% against doubling anything. Magic does not work well with exponents in my opinion.

I am sure we'll see this as part of infinite combos all over the place. As a commander, I am not sure there're enough effects to make it really work, but whatever :) Mono green is pretty much the most over-explored thing.

As a big squirrel lover, I am really happy to finally see more Squirrel Tribal. And I really love the uniqueness of Chatterfang, Squirrel General doubling mechanic. It's a cute card, and despite its broken potential with Pitiless Plunderer, I would like to build a "fair" token/squirrel deck with it.

Chatterfang, Squirrel General seems pretty cool, I like it. The new tech of "add that many extra tokens of a specific type" creates an interesting deckbuilding option, where you can still create the tribal deck, but still have an incentive to run weird token generators that don't line up perfectly, because you get bonus squirrels. We saw a similar thing with Thalisse, Reverent Medium, and I enjoy the design space. And if this plus Pitiless Plunderer makes a legitimate modern squirrel combo deck... all the better.

Serra's Emissary might actually be a new perfect bomb for Ephara. My dudes are unblockable and great blockers? :P Or prot instants. Pretty cool.

And the very niche application of making yourself immune to stuff like Ghirapur Aether Grid / Hangarback Walker / Blasting Station is also kinda cool. The prot creatures has some applications against Blood Artist effects too.

A cheaper better Blazing Archon style card is definitely something we definitely wanted.

I especially like how it shuts off Walking Ballista et al entirely since many of those effects (e.g. Platinum Emperion ) lose because you can kill the creature with the combo effect.

Oh, I definitely doubt it will. But the possibility exists, and that's fun enough for me.

It's on the high end of mana costs but I might be making room for Serra's Emissary in my Bruna deck. Picking creatures helps on defense and offense, and Bruna can recur it if needed. Not sure how great it'll be, but won't hurt to try.

I can't really do anything except roll my eyes at Mark Rosewater's squirrel obsession. Feels like such a cringy boomer joke.
At least Maro doesn't have stain glass religious art of squirrels as a profile pic.

Also I continue to be deeply, deeply bored by magic's tedious process of making every creature type in existence into a tribal deck. Do squirrels socialize at all in the wild outside of mating? Don't tell me, I don't care.
A few people at wotc have said its one of the most popular kinds of decks which is why every has set has some tribal. If you want it to stop your gonna need to convince people to stop wanting to play tribal.

The squirrel thing feels so forced. It's an obvious combo piece, it's generally strong, it looks like someone's edgy fursona from 2005, it has no flavour. Toski made sense, even outside its grounding in Norse mythology as both a squirrel and a legend. This doesn't, it has no prior justification in flavour, and no evidence of any satisfactory flavour coming. Part of the appeal of legendary creatures is that they are first and foremost characters, with either stories or interesting clues as to one. It gives EDH a bit of RPG flavour, especially with tribal decks that encourage you to build around a theme. This feels like the guy who showed up to the D&D game with his new Sonic OC.

Really wish Serra's Emissary said permanents rather than just creatures, it would have a lot more applications (without being overpowered in the slightest).

I'm still confused by the addition of black for Squirrels. Initially I had dismissed it as a quirk of Unstable, and then Helica Glider moved into white, a more sensible place for our furry friends. But here we are, black is apparently the design space they want to use for Squirrels.

Oh, well look who's no fun. This is a game where I can pilot a helicopter with a giant turtle, so I'd say there's room for another squirrel of legend. ALSO, may I remind you that TWD Rick is a legal commander as of last year, so what commitment to flavor exactly are you expecting of WotC?

Remember, expectation is the mother of disappointment.

I also, along with a majority of the EDH community, did not like SL:TWD and want those cards banned. I enjoy this game, not out of devotion to WotC, but because of a the community and a number of personal and subjective aspects (flavour, in-game decisions, neat synergies) that make it fun for me. I want to be able to comment on how new cards fit or don't fit with those aspects, in the forum for fans to talk about new cards. It's not like I'm calling for a boycott of the set or harassing the designers. This notion that fans must either be hysterically loyal to the brand or else cynically stoic about the things they ostensibly do for fun is more toxic to fandom than the "fan entitlement" they overcorrect from.

I actually really like the flavor of the squirrel legend. He's a mighty squirrel that calls other squirrels to his side, but sacrifices them for his own power. Yet the squirrels still follow him. He's like a squirrel demagogue.

I like the darker side of nature shown here. It's a humorous thing sure, but not everything needs to be super serious.

Spreading Insurrection is another solid wincon for storm decks, and a bit more interactive than most, given that it still wins through creature combat. I much prefer temporary steal for mass-steal effects, because it incentivizes the player to win quickly, rather then just screw around with a bunch of stolen value pieces.

Late for dinner is meh, but still playable I think in reanimator decks without black. White certainly has enough good reanimation targets.

Tourach's Canticle all but confirms that Tourach will be one of the new legends in the set.

Late to Dinner is an amazing card on every level. From the art, to the flavor, to the ability. A pure homerun. It's probably going to be one of those cards I run in decks even when I shouldn't just because I love it so much.

But my favorite part of it is how it reminds me of one of my favorite childhood books, Animalia

You can also toss 15 squirrels to kill Emrakul too boot.

"Golgari Squirrels.dec" is certainly something to be typing out, I'll say that. Not for me though. Already have three decks in , all with varying amounts of self-sac, grind, etc.

EDIT: Also, bomb angel that'll be $20 or $30 is bomb. Come on Sanity, post about the cool schtuff...

I'm not not super impressed by today's spoilers so far, but there are certainly some interesting things.
  • Lucid Dreams is mildly interesting as a chunky card draw spell. I don't think it's that difficult to get it to a draw four for 5 mana, and it can be even better. Sorcery speed probably means it is too slow though.
  • Late to Dinner is a nice upgrade over Resurrection, but four mana reanimation is still in a bit of an awkward spot. Still, white doesn't have that many options, so not bad to have another one.
  • Serra's Emissary is an interesting reanimation target / fatty. A bit difficult to evaluate, but granting protection from creatures to your board is a pretty sweet mass evasion effect. It's not quite the pile of value / win condition I usually expect from my 7-drops, but it's still very interesting.
  • Chatterfang, Squirrel General is a little boring as a combo commander, but as a Parallel Lives in the command zone (where the copies are all squirrels), it has a lot of potential. There aren't that many 'when a creature dies, make a token' cards - most of them require nontoken creatures to die, so there isn't a ton of redundancy anyway.
  • Ravenous Squirrel is somewhat interesting as an artifact sac outlet for Glissa, the Traitor decks. I've been unimpressed by Vampiric Rites in the past, but being on a creature is certainly relevant - it can sacrifice itself in a pinch.
  • Rise and Shine is mildly interesting as a March of the Machines / Overrun variant. Not a terrible finisher for artifact-based decks. Could be very amusing for eggs decks.
  • (edit)Sword of Hearth and Home looks excellent. Ramps, flickers, some incidental theft protection.... lots of relevant abilities. More conditional than Sword of the Animist, since it requires combat damage, but it also works fantastically alongside double strike. If you can fetch it with and then flicker Stoneforge Mystic, that's a massive pile of value. If only Stoneforge were to get a few more reprints so it were more affordable....

For flavor and design Ravenous Squirrel seems really good for Gyome, Master Chef.

Lol, touché.

Though for the record, I use the phelddagrif art as my profile pic because of my love of the card's mechanics, not its type line (and also my love of how much effort went into that alter - I double sleeve my phelddagrif but not my time twister, lol). And personally I find hippo Pope to be a better joke than the third (or is it fourth?) time around for killer squirrels in magic but YMMV. I didn't mind squirrels the first time, but then I had just started playing. Most jokes don't get better with repetition.

I don't actually expect it to stop, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to roll my eyes from the sidelines. Also everyone who likes building tribal decks is a hack don't you dare @ me.

I really hate the notion that keeps popping up in fandom that if someone goes 'hey maybe tone down the vitrol' in a space dedicated to the fandom, they're demanding hysterical loyalty or cynic stoicism. Perhaps they're just requesting that you treat other players like human beings, and not come into a space dedicated to something and proceed to loudly defecate all over it. Or at the very least, when you do and someone goes "hey, that's a bit much, people still like this even if they're not you", consider leaving it at that, rather than insisting that people are silencing you.
