Why do people run straight away from cars when being chased by them, in films?
Or run alone into a dark forest when fleeing an axe murderer?
Or split up a group only to be picked off one by one? What is strengh in numbers or herd behavior?

I want the job of reality consultant for TV/Filmmakers so badly.

Like..no, you can't afford a multi-million-dollar loft on a waiter's salary, if you're running from a car get out the street, people do not get missed with automatic gunfire at close range while running in a straight line away, running from explosions no work like that, getting hit in the head with a bat is often permanently debilitating or fatal, blah blah etc etc.

It's pretty obvious to me that most people who make movies and tv shows are almost completely disconnected from reality.

This kind of stuff drives me nuts. In the most recent Falcon and Winter Soldier episode, the lame new Captain America threw that shield and hit a dude square in the head, and they just did the whole 'clearly dangerous/fatal head injury only causes momentary unconsciousness' thing. The guy should've had a shattered skull.

you all have a very high bar for suspension of disbelief

@DirkGently I'm guessing you didn't know that cloud atlas was a novel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Atlas_(novel)

Cloud Atlas is a work combining metafiction, historical fiction, contemporary fiction and science fiction. Its text is interconnected nested stories that take the reader from the remote South Pacific in the 19th century to the island of Hawai'i in a distant post-apocalyptic future. The author has said that the book is about reincarnation and the universality of human nature, and the title references a changing landscape ('cloud') over manifestations of fixed human nature (the 'atlas').

I did, but it doesn't really make any difference to me. I judge the movie based on its own merits.

The movie definitely didn't make me want to read the book, I'll say that much. I still generally had fun, but a lot of that was laughing at the movie's expense. I hope the book is less pretentious, though based on your summary I'm skeptical.

Just watched Cloud Atlas. Man, that movie is way dumber than it thinks it is. Same for sense8 tbh, but at least that didn't have Tom Hanks doing a cringey inconsistent future-cajun(???) accent.
It's real bad. The Wachowskis definitely ripped The Matrix off because everything else they've ever done has been a steaming pile of garbage.

Back in high school, I was part of a writing club hosted a teacher who must have had just...unlimited patience, and the inhuman ability to completely suppress laughter. My writing back then was definitely cringy, but some of the stuff other people wrote...oh my goodness. Absolute apex cringe. One in particular sticks in my memory called "the realms" which we were treated to one chapter of, and involved a sauron-like villain who literally spoke in 100% caps lock, a coalition of Amazonian warrior-women who each had differently-colored, exhaustively-described hair and unique skills, and the maximum amount of pretentious melodrama that has ever been fit into 5 pages of text.

Anyway, I kinda get the feeling the Wachowskis are the grown-up version of that. I'll grant that their work is rarely boring to watch (even the filler-y parts of sense8 were entertaining insofar as I could turn to my mate and say "hahaha, are we KIDDING right now? We're really going back to this stupid boring plot when the whole world is at stake?"), and honestly if so much of their oeuvre wasn't so pretentious it could be just good old-fashioned fun. But daaaaamn do they think they're amazing. This quote from the wikipedia article makes me laugh every time I reread it:
Lilly Wachowski stated as "soon as [critics] encounter a piece of art they don't fully understand the first time going through it, they think it's the fault of the movie or the work of art. They think, 'It's a mess ... This doesn't make any sense.' And they reject it, just out of an almost knee-jerk response to some ambiguity or some gulf between what they expect they should be able to understand, and what they understand."

In the same interview, Lana Wachowski stated people "will try to will Cloud Atlas to be rejected. They will call it messy, or complicated, or undecided whether it's trying to say something New Agey-profound or not. And we're wrestling with the same things that Dickens and Hugo and David Mitchell and Herman Melville were wrestling with. We're wrestling with those same ideas, and we're just trying to do it in a more exciting context than conventionally you are allowed to. ... We don't want to say, 'We are making this to mean this.' What we find is that the most interesting art is open to a spectrum of interpretation.
I will say this much for Cloud Atlas - at least it was way less cringy than Jupiter Ascending. Jupiter Ascending did seem like something I actually could have read from one of my peers in high school tbh, plus or minus a few hundred million dollars of budget.

I recently re-read Coraline by Neil Gaiman and forgot how good it was. Very much closer to the grimm versions of fairy tale than OZ, Neverland or Alice that it somewhat resembles. Odd a part of really is scared more it as an adult vs when I first read it. It makes me a bit disappointed that the movie kinda had a sugar coat layer but I'm not sure how you'd adapt the book for kids the way it is written.

@Toshi

I think Watchmen is debatable. They did cut out the space squid after all. The casting was pretty perfect though.

@DirkGently

I'd say that's a foul ball in this context. TV has a better chance with capturing more of the small details that enrich novels because of their overall longer runtime. Movies have to squish all that into 1-3 hours.

Idk, in terms of pages per hour, I'd say Game of Thrones had to compress a lot tighter than the Hobbit trilogy

Oh, also I'd say LotR but I'd read it a year or two before the movies came out iirc. But I'm sure it did for other people.

(The Hobbit, movies, obviously, are pure misery)

The funny thing about that novel-to-movie transition is that there's a lot of good content in the novel that didn't make it into the movie (perfectly understandable, you can't fit it all), so those scenes from the first novel became some of the best parts of the second and third movies. The waterfall scene from the second movie is mostly pulled from the first book. And then there is no third book, the third movie is has a plot invented by the movie makers as an excuse to string together the action and adventure from the books that didn't fit in the first two movies.

I'm not some kind of comic purist that feel comics should be adapted panel by panel but oh god Watchmen fails so bad at adapting the original source material I can't deal with. I feel like they read it at 16 and didnt do it again with any more mature critical eyes. Its a sex & violence fest, it lakcs the critics and only delivers aesthetics. No wonder is from the same team that gave us superman that are the polar opposite of what superman is!

The Jessica Jones TV show made me pick up the Alias books and are great! my favorite comic book adaptation ever I think

Is anyone else noticing that the prices on precons seems to be dramatically inflated from previous releases? The set of 5 preorder is $300 in NZ right now - last year I paid $200. The prices look pretty inflated in the US too, from what I remember. On top of that, apparently the prerelease is delayed a week in NZ. Anyone know what's going on, or have any idea whether prices are likely to go down?

Amazon seems to have a deal on low packaging versions of them, which is what I did since I wanted a second copy of Archaeomancer's Map and I like a lot of stuff in the lorehold deck.

But yeah it's the new hotness to try to gouge for precons even though they basically always regress to <$30 or so. Hell you can get precons from two years ago still for sub-50.

(I got I think three total copies of Mystic Intellect, despite them having Dockside Extortionist, for about $30 each and you can still get complete sets of last year's precons for like $140 despite them having the incredibly busted free spell cycle).

Paying much over 30-ish is a trap at least stateside

Unfortunately after shipping and all, amazon is about the same price as buying them locally. Although they're sold out of the set of 5 in low packaging, which would presumably be cheaper. I can't imagine what sort of captain planet villain would want to pay extra for the extra packaging version lol. If I could get all 5 shipped to me in a single BCW I'd jump on it. Hell, send me just the new cards in a manila envelope.

Anyway, guess I'll wait. There's a solid chance I'll have an opportunity to pick them up in the states later even if NZ prices spike.

Have you ever seen a movie adaption of a novel that did?
Watchmen
Is Watchmen really a "novel" though?
EDIT: Nevermind. Misunderstanding. Was reading the thread backwards.

From what I understand and what the guys at KoC any my closer local have told me, it's purely on account of WotC distribution no longer being local to NZ/Aus. Being offshore means it's cheaper to disseminate product for Daddy Hasbro and more expensive for the grassroots stores, and consequently, more expensive for the end user.

On top of that, I'm sure you've noticed literally the last 5 releases in a row have been delayed to our region too, so it's all aces for us in the antipodes. I'm not too fased myself for these releases, I've just been picking up singles at a very delayed rate due to RL being frantic and dad life making money tight. I'm not grabbing these Precons at all, and there's virtually nothing for me from Strixhaven as is. Which is good, it's respite from product release fatigue.

Still, you'd think considering we're one of the few places in the world where prerelease/draft/RL events can happen uninhibited they'd sort their %$#% out.

TL;DR - I'd assume we will get limited supplies of any releases coming, and I'd expect delays too. With that in mind, either prices will spike based on an an arbitrarily limited supply, or you'll have to preorder to secure your products. You're probably best to wait and pick them up stateside if the opportunity presents itself.

I think this is the first time a prerelease has been delayed, isn't it? How do you mean exactly?

Nah, the last 3 or 4 at least have been at least a week past the established date given by WotC. Kaldheim for sure was, Commander Legends was, and there were at least a couple last year too. I can't remember names of sets, but it has been that sort of year I guess.

It's no skin off my nose, I just buy singles, but my LGS guy jumps on FB every release to say 'sorry, they've pushed the stock out, it's out of my hands, I'll honor your orders as soon as I can'. Like he doesn't even have to apologise anymore really, we all know it's not his fault.
