Hi,

I'm looking for a tool or article to help with word count. I tried mtg design but it won't let me change the text to 7.5 to 9 points which is what mtgwiki says is the standard. Actually I can't get it to move from 35 points on mtg design no matter the word count so maybe i'm doing something wrong.

I noticed some of the judge feedbacks mention that the text won't fit the card so i'm hoping you guys have a resource you can share that can tell me that.

Cheers!

@Stankweed Imp: I would look into using Magic Set Editor. It's a fairly robust, free-to-use program for making mock ups of cards. It auto-adjusts the text size based on number of lines/line breaks in the card's text. It won't actually cap the text at any point, but it will help you determine if your text is too wordy for a Magic card.

I know there is a renaissance of the most important thread of this forum, but if everything is ok among the judges?

Thanks for your concern - it seems we're all around and alright. Dragoon has already judged and I (and hopefully slimytrout) will judge tomorrow. You've correctly pointed out that a lot is going on in this forum right now, especially with the launch of the custom card generator section of the website!

Yeah, as I said when I signed up to judge, I'm a lot busier than usual this month, so I'll do my very best to judge tomorrow although I will probably be sparser than usual on the details.

(2/2) Subchallenges — Yep yep. Card definitely isn't red, so I don't think this violates the spirit of the subchallenge, if that was what you meant. (Also, in the future don't post anything along with your card – I'm not DQing you because this one was way more likely to cost you points by making me try to consider whether it violated the spirit of the challenge than to gain you them, but it's a fine line.)
Thanks for letting me know! In my mind, I thought it was okay because it was self-damaging rather than beneficial (in fact the reason I said it is this is the kind of card that I myself would lean towards not giving full score for the subchallenge). But you're right, it *is* a fine line.

P.S.: I didn't really mean to be as harsh on this card as I ended up being – I honestly was pretty surprised when I tallied up the points.
No offense taken! It just happens from time to time that you have an idea that you had not thought through enough, especially after thinking on a problem for a long period and someone with a fresh mind on task clearly see the glaring issue. WOTC sometimes slips unappealing cards as well an it would be a troubling vanity from any designer, professional or not, if they believed that they can never create bad cards. If something like this happens, it is not a harsh judgement, just "unfortunate" one. But probably even more useful then another one with high tally of points.
If I want to disagree on anything, it would be about something that I have spotted during the previous round as well, that you consider cards with abilities triggering on block as unintersting for Johnnies, because they "depend on opponent doing something". But the ways of forcing the opponent to attack in first place are something a Johnny will be inclined to look for! Alluring Siren, Oracle en-Vec, Goblin Diplomats, just to name few. I guess it boils down to personal "philosophical" look on Magic, but the first thing that comes in my mind among the Johnny's suite is turning wonky cards to working cards via others.

That's a very fair point about Johnnies -- I would definitely say that that is the psychographic that I fit into the least, by quite a wide margin, so I think that knowing what appeals to them is one of my weakest points in evaluating designs (both my own and others). Well, that and not really having a great sense of appropriate power level for EDH, but from reading the unreleased card discussion over in that forum, I'm not entirely sure that anyone does ;)

I had a question regarding the main challenge. Open ended as it is, I didn't want to submit something that wouldn't qualify for it.

The design I have in mind has an ability very similar to Ophidian, albeit worded in a slightly different manner (a replacement effect with a reflexive trigger stapled on). Would such an ability satisfy the main challenge either on a single creature or as a blanket effect?

I would really have to see the design but replacing the combat damage step would most likely fit assuming you executed it in a, well, replacement way.

@Subject16 I'm willing to take your entry as an example of "modifying the combat damage step" so I would say yes it fits the challenge.

And that is very kind of you to offer! Thanks for your help, I'll divide up the entries between us then. (And of course I'll still judge you out of competition.)

Yes, as long as (any and all) artifacts can be sacrificed to the cost or effect.

I will be hosting December's MCC - please note that both the first round thread and the judge signup thread will be going out relatively late in the day (Eastern time) tomorrow as I will be working late.

I'm curious but has the "Quality" rubric ever been spelled out? I know that, for example, names must be bolded, the type-line em-dash has to actually be a — instead of a -, the rarity must be in uncoloured text, etc, but has that actually been codified anywhere? I think in the reserved FAQ post there should be an example card with explanations.
