Obeka, Brute Chronologist - All good things must come to an END

Token copies of creatures

Draw with end of turn triggers

Extra turns

Instants (disruption and protection)

Instant/Sorcery (tutors)

Approximate Total Cost:

If you've ever dabbled into the world of Sundial of the Infinite you'll have some understanding about just how much goes on at "beginning of end step" and advantages you can get if you end the turn abruptly.
The timing of Obeka and spells
Show
Hide
Just to make it clear exactly when you should be using Obeka it's important to know when effects happen.
The game has phases and as part of that there is the "post-combat main phase", then the "end phase". The end phase is further broken down into steps. There is the "end step" and there is also a "clean up step".
The clean up step is where you discard down to your given hand size and it is also where "until end of turn" effects are removed. That includes damage and any cards that would give effects as stated on the cards.
So when Obeka say "end the turn", it can be quite confusing exactly what this means?
It rally means go to the clean up step. Note that no players actually get priority during the clean up step, unless some other state based action triggers.
Now if we look at the wording of a lot of cards they often have terminology along these lines:
  • ..at end of turn
  • ..beginning of the next end step
  • ..beginning of your end step
  • ..beginning of the end step
  • ..beginning of each player's end step
  • ..beginning each opponent's end step
Now it's important to note that older cards used the wording "at end of turn" however they are all errata to have the terminology "beginning of" and "end step" with appropriate variant which the card allude to.

It is on at the "beginning of".."end step" that these triggers go onto the stack.
So you can in fact wait until these triggers are on the stack and then use Obeka ability to avoid them.
You can obviously use her at any time you have priority but you don't have to use her pre reaching your end step if you want to avoid any harmful triggers once they are on the stack. In fact I'll explain why most of most of the time you'll want to use her on the end step.
There is a different between "next", "your", "the", "each player's" and "each opponent's".
However "the end step" and "each player's" equate to the same thing.
A lot of them will say "beginning of the next end step" and you can take this literally, so some effect has taken place and it will only occur when the next end step occurs.
With Obeka if you activate her before you get to the "beginning of the end step", then the end step never happened, it got skipped, so in fact the effect will wait until till the next end step occurs, which is likely the next opponents turn.
This is why it is important in most circumstances to actually wait for the triggers to be on the stack while you are in the end step.

Now there are cards that can counter Obeka activated ability like Nimble Obstructionist, Stifle, Disallow for example.
So you might want to use Obeka in your post-combat main phase if you have a way to achieve getting her online again.
Let's say you had enough mana to cast her and had a way to give her haste.
Whip of Erebos would be another example where you can only activate it during a main phase, so if you had a way to kill her and then activate the Whip of Erebos then you could tap to activate again in the face of a Stifle effect.
But you have to weigh this up with whether there are "next end step" triggers that you don't want to happen in the following opponents turn if using during a main phase.

Hand into play
Let's get a flavor for the deck by looking at what is probably the crown jewel in the 99, Sneak Attack.
You get to spend r to put a creature into play, but normally you'd have to sacrifice it at end of turn. Well not with Obeka.
Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded is similar but costs more and restricted to only Red and Artifact creatures.
With these in mind there is a set of powerful Red (or splash) and Artifact creatures you can put into play at these very reduced costs.

Token copies of creatures
Another feature of Magic cards in general is that there are a number of ways to generate token creatures, however a lot of them you have to sacrifice/exile at the "end of turn" or "end of combat".
Here we have a plethora of ways to get additional value out of our creatures by making token copies of them and rather than being temporary board additions, with Obeka they will be permanent for your opponents to deal with.
Mirror March can make duplicates of your creature when entering the battlefield.
Flamerush Rider and Blade of Selves make copies during the attack phase. Myriad makes copies for as many opponents as you have (minus 1), but keep in mind that if you want to keep them around permanently you'll need to use Obeka during your combat phase.
Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Mimic Vat, Felhide Spiritbinder can be done at other times.

It must be noted that if you do make token copies of some legendary creatures, that you can keep the token around and let the original go to graveyard as it'll have haste.
There are legendary creatures that benefit from attacking, so you can look to do this.

Graveyard to battlefield
Carrying on the theme of creating permanent token creatures, there are also a lot of cards that can bring creatures back from the graveyard with the stipulation that they need to be removed at the end of turn.
Araumi of the Dead Tide, Feldon of the Third Path, Whip of Erebos, Dawn of the Dead, Sedris, the Traitor King make up a powerful suite of cards that can bring back creatures from your graveyard.

Fatestitcher and Corpse Connoisseur, as well as creatures that you might unearth with Sedris, the Traitor King can be kept around permanently.

Underworld Breach isn't about creature reanimation so much as just a solid card to get value at later stages of the game.
You can keep it around until the next players turn with Obeka ability as it normally goes to graveyard at "end step" but this is not particularly useful.
Maybe you can get an additional use out of a counterspell?
However you can use it with extra turn cards to get multiple uses out of it which I explain later.

Putting cards into your graveyard
Given all this graveyard synergy, getting creatures into your graveyard by any means is advantages, so the deck is designed to do this in a number of ways.
Entomb, Buried and Intuition will help with this.
Even Gamble can be used in this way where it might not matter if it goes to your hand or your graveyard.

Jace's Archivist, Dragon Mage and Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion are creatures in the deck to stack your graveyard while also drawing more cards.

Faithless Looting are further cards that both draw you cards and then allow you to discard, stacking your graveyard with creatures potentially.

Corpse Connoisseur and Gravebreaker Lamia can also directly put a creature into your graveyard.

Additional draw with end of turn triggers
There are a number of cards that have the benefit of drawing extra cards, but the downside of discarding at end of turn.
Psychic Vortex, Avaricious Dragon, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker, Ideas Unbound.

Psychic Vortex has a literally cumulative draw so will get out of hand pretty quickly and the fact that you don't have to sacrifice a land (or discard hand) means that this is just amazing with Obeka!

Of note if you do have these types of cards in play and Obeka is dealt with and you do end up having to discard your hand, then this may be alright as I've already mentioned being able to bring creatures back from your graveyard, so you might in fact be able to leverage off this.
I mean if you end up having some creatures in your hand that you want in your graveyard it is not inconceivable that you go to the end step on purpose for a turn.

Extra turns
Red has the cheapest to cast extra turn cards in Final Fortune, Last Chance, Warrior's Oath with the obvious terrible downside of losing the game at end of those next turns. Obeka just means you get to have an extra turn for two mana..hmm busted.

I already mentioned Underworld Breach because if you have enough cards in your graveyard to exile 3 cards for the escape cost, then you can keep recasting an extra turn card and because you are the next player to have a turn the Underworld Breach will remain in play when using Obeka to end the turns before either of beginning at end step triggers occur for "you lose the game" and "sacrifice Underworld Breach.".
You can just keep having extra turns as long as you have 3 cards to exile from your graveyard each of those turns.

"Detrimental" enters or leaves the battlefield triggers
Another really strong element of the deck is actually lands in the deck that return other lands to hand when they enter the battlefield. They all have the ability to produce two mana.
Dimir Aqueduct, Izzet Boilerworks, Rakdos Carnarium.
Lotus Field even goes one more by producing three mana and hexproof.
Because you can prevent having to return (or sacrifice) a land, this means that for subsequent turns it's like you've played an additional land.
So in a way Obeka has a pseudo ability to "play an additional land each turn" when you have bounce lands to play. They do come into play tapped and you do have to make sure that playing those lands are the last thing you want to do in that turn.

So we can cheat creatures into play from hand or graveyard, what are some heavy hitters to make use of this then?
Given that you can create copies of creatures with duplicate tokens, I've been careful to select not too many legendary creatures unless of course they play a major role in our game plan. The "legend rule" doesn't make copies all that appealing.
Also Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded has the stipulation Red or Artifact creatures so this does play a part in selection.

I've already mentioned some big boys but further to these we have creatures that greatly benefit in combat;
Balefire Dragon, Hellkite Tyrant, Zara, Renegade Recruiter.

Zara, Renegade Recruiter is a new commander legend and has the ability to steal creatures from opponents hands. You're supposed to return it back at the end of turn, but we know that is not happening :P

What creatures are good to create multiple tokens?
Having the deck just be haymakers means that you are a bit reliant on particular cards.

So to balance this out there are also creatures to help with setting up a better mana base with Dockside Extortionist, Burnished Hart, Solemn Simulacrum.
Creating multiple copies of these during the course of the game means that you are well setup to just hard cast some cards if necessary.

Imperial Recruiter can be used to find these type of cards, so is appealing to trigger multiple times in a game.

Sedraxis Alchemist is a catchall for returning troublesome permanents and you'll be happy to make duplicates of it every turn if possible.

Gilded Drake, Snapcaster Mage, Thieving Skydiver, Goblin Engineer, Baleful Strix, Spellseeker are all cheap creatures that are good to get additional triggers from them.

What else does the deck do?
Sundial of the Infinite is in the deck as a backup to Obeka.

Pact of Negation has the added security that you can tap Obeka to end your turn if somehow you don't have the mana to pay for it.

Obeka, Brute Chronologist can be used during opponents turns, but it is a may ability.
99.9% of the time you should be ending your own turn, but on the odd occasion you could use it as a tool to prevent other players from using instants during other players turns.
An example would be if you know a player has Cyclonic Rift then you can hold up Obeka and then it makes it really hard for that player to play it outside of their own turn.
The reason is that if they go to play it in another players turn, you can use Obeka and I'm sure the player whose turn it is not going to want their permanents returned so will say yes to end the turn, meaning the Rift will not take effect.
Using Fatestitcher to untap Obeka is the most likely situation where you force opponents to use there value instants in their own turns.

Wouldn't underworld breach exile at the end step of the next player: "At the beginning of the end step, sacrifice Underworld Breach." Wouldn't this trigger at every end step?

Either way, Obeka looks like a special commander, i'm interested how it will play.
EDH Decks:
Queen Marchesa
Chainer, Dementia Master
Will Kenrith
Bruna, the fading light

Yes that's what I allude to. Maybe my wording is confusing?

I talk about Underworld Breach in the "Graveyard to battlefield" section where I explain that it will only remain for one additional turn, meaning literally the next players. I'll add some more wording to make that clear.

Then I talk about the interaction with extra turn cards in the "Extra turns" section. As you will be the next player with extra turns it means that the Underworld Breach will still be in play for your turn and you are constantly recasting extra turn cards so the Breach stays in play.

I missed that, my bad, that's a nasty combo, turning edh into solitaire. Would extra wheel effects be a good idea? You go through your deck faster and you make sure your Underworld Breach combo stays active.

Pssh, the best thing about this card is the fact that it turns Sedris, the Traitor King into a legit Reanimator Commander now!

The deck seems lacking in Card Draw, as per most of your first iterations.

And this would also be a fun place to Reanimate Phage the Untouchable a few times as well.

Just listing the options to get an idea in my head what can be done;
Instants and sorcery; Wheel of Fortune, Dark Deal, Reforge the Soul, Whispering Madness, Windfall, Tolarian Winds.

From a creature point of view there are plenty of options; Book Devourer, Knollspine Dragon, Cavalier of Flame, Anje's Ravager, Azra Oddsmaker, Jace's Archivist, Magus of the Wheel, Magus of the Jar, Ox of Agonas, Rix Maadi Reveler, Runehorn Hellkite
Even Nezahal, Primal Tide will draw cards over time and you can discard cards with it.

I listed big draw into discard cards, but I'll also list more low to the ground options. I think draw into discard is the way to go, so filtering efficiently rather than just draw.

Careful Study, Cathartic Reunion, Chart a Course, Collective Defiance, Faithless Looting, Catalog, Frantic Search, Thrill of Possibility.

More low to the ground creatures are; Jace, Vryn's Prodigy, Magus of the Bazaar.

Also of note are planeswalkers; Chandra Ablaze, Chandra, Flamecaller, Chandra, Flame's Catalyst, Dack Fayden, Daretti, Scrap Savant, Jace, Cunning Castaway, Jaya Ballard, Kasmina, Enigmatic Mentor, Sarkhan, Fireblood, Teferi, Master of Time, The Royal Scions.
The reason I'm mentioning these is because Planebound Accomplice is a thing :P However its hard to mix between wanting a huge number of creatures to make the the other cards work well and trying to squeeze in walkers. Gets a bit diluted I think.

Actually I'm going to take out the a few of the "detrimental" ETB creatures for the reason that if you do use them with Sneak Attack/Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded or graveyard return then you need to end the turn immediately and you won't be able to attack with them that turn, so the sort of surprise factor is lost on them with the haste.
For this reason Phage the Untouchable would also be a bit slow as well.

What do you think about adding anger, lightning greaves and hall of the bandit lord for haste?

We could also add more creatures that get significantly better with haste.

PS: I think the new encore ability will have some more goodies for the deck.

Doesn't work with that card or effects that read 'until end of turn'.

Only if it says 'at the beginning of the next end step' because you can respond to the trigger.

You can respond to shallow grave for instance, but not act of treason.

I'm trying to never cast the bigger creatures, rather using the Sneak Attack/Purphoros or the graveyard return to play cards which all give haste to the creatures anyway.
Plus the cards that make token copies give haste to the tokens as well.
If you have cards like Flameshadow Conjuring, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Mirror March and you do hard cast cards like Balefire Dragon, Hellkite Tyrant, Dragon Mage then you can get the effects of them from the token copy.
Sure it would be nice to attack several players (with the OG version as well), but you are still getting enough same turn value.
Also it is possible that you can make token copies of legendary creature like Zara, Renegade Recruiter, Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion, Moraug, Fury of Akoum, Sedris, the Traitor King and let the OG die to the legend rule and keep the token copy so that you get the haste with them.

Giving haste to Obeka isn't all that necessary either as you'll probably be tapping most of your mana to cast her and so won't be putting other cards into play all that much to activate her.
The biggest reason you'd specially want haste for her is if you've cast an extra turn card and then opponents remove her before you get to that additional turn to stop you from trying not to lose the game. A pretty big reason for sure, but you can play around removal pretty well buy testing the waters with other plays. What I mean is that if your opponents have removal they will be more than likely to use it if you do some other plays first as you just get so much value they'll fire it off before you try the extra turn cards.

But Lightning Greaves always has a potential place in decks because of the ability to give your creatures protection as well.

Yeah I think they'll be some encore goodies to come for sure. The encore costs have been pretty high thus far, one to two mana more than their normal cost. So just have to wait and see.

Thanks Darren!

I'm wondering if Corpse Dance and Shallow Grave can be viable. We can let our commander go to the grave when he gets removed and bring him back with haste. Waiting an extra turn after he dies to gain value from most of our deck feels very squishy to me. We can also add a nice package of Mission Briefing, Snapcaster Mage and Goblin-Dark Dwellers, which can let us time walk twice with our 2 mana extra turns.

Wish we could find room for Glorious End as well. Don't know if it fits the theme of the deck, but it's an absolute pet card :)
Another idea for a theme would be using more creatures that gain value when they attack: Hellkite Tyrant, Sphinx Ambassador (repeatable Bribery on a stick), Mindleech Mass (pretty janky), Etali Primal Storm, Thief of Sanity, Lord of the Void, Wrexial the Risen Deep, Scion of Darkness.
Theme Name: "Violence can be used for Good". This would also make the deck extra unique since attacking for value is kind of out of style.

I think we need more artifact mana. Signets and talismans seem extra good since they let us cast Obeka on turn 3.
Two more pet cards with synergy ^^ Hate Mirage and Puppeteer Clique - what do you think?

I had Corpse Dance, Shallow Grave, Goryo's Vengeance, Footsteps of the Goryo on my short list but ultimately decided I wanted permanent recursion.
Corpse Dance can be recursive but the thought of spending 5 each turn just didn't make it all that appealing.
However you are right they can be insurance against removal of Obeka.

There are these that can get Obeka back with Aurami, River of the Dead, Feldon of the Third Path, Whip of Erebos, Dawn of the Dead, Sedris, the Traitor King, Underworld Breach, Mimic Vat, so we do have a number of ways already.
But I'll still add Corpse Dance and Reanimate.

I do have Hellkite Tyrant already :)
Yeah there are tons of great haymakers in Grixis, but I've tried to keep to Red or Artifacts as much as possible for Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded.

But it looks like you've got a "steal" deck in mind and you should just go for it.
Spinal Embrace and Slave of Bolas are further cards that go nicely with that theme.
I think we need more artifact mana. Signets and talismans seem extra good since they let us cast Obeka on turn 3.

I'll add the Red Tailsman as the deck is 50% Red 25% Black 25% Blue (not exactly but close) as I could do with some more Turn 2 plays.

Actually what happens with Kaho, Minamo Historian is that the physical card goes onto the stack and once resolves goes to graveyard, just like you would have cast it from your hand. It's not like it makes a copy of the spell and the card itself remains in exile to be cast over again.
So you literally only get to cast each of the 3 spells once each.

Glorious End seems like a natural inclusion, as it both is an additional means to short-circuit a turn, but also fills a similar space as the Final Fortune effects, and can be used as a fog or counterspell in a inch too, with none of the downside it normally carries.

Depending on your creature suite, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker is a solid add. Same with Twinflame. A few others in my list are Puppeteer Clique and Hate Mirage.
Kiki-Jiki is in there :)

Rakshasa Debaser has a similar feel to Puppeteer Clique, although you have to attack. But the encore putting maybe 3 of them into play is a pretty nice late game.

I hadn't thought about using Glorious End like a counterspell. However if you've got it in hand then I'd assumed you just want to fire it off during an opponents upkeep.
If that's makes sense if you hold onto it thinking of using it like a counterspell then I'd just prefer Counterspell.

With the extra turn cards I'm not going to fire those off unless I'm pretty sure Obeka is secure. With Glorious End firing off during an opponents turn that means that a number of other opponents will probably get to have their turns and they have the information that if they can get rid of Obeka that turn that you will lose.
If you cast the extra turn cards then opponents don't get a chance to untap and react the same way.
Anyway that is why I'm not that sold on the card yet but not to say that I won't try it.

Hellkite Courser is interesting in the Obeka could have a million commander tax and you'd still be able to get her into play and keep her around as she can end the turn before the trigger resolves to remove her.

Well finally got my sweaty palms on the cards needed for the deck and played out about 10 games.
The first thing that was immediately obvious is that I had way to many copy token creators and not nearly enough actual creatures to target them with.
I've added heaps of 2/3 cmc creatures that have ETBs to make use of additional tokens.

The other thing is the timing of when you end the turn really doesn't work mixing and matching.
That is between basically "end of combat", "beginning of next end step" and the ways I was looking to abuse detrimental ETB triggers.
The problem is that once you get into the game you are creating tokens and you almost always are going to want to wait until the end of your actual turn.
So I just found cards with Hecatomb, Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger, Wormfang Manta you just don't find windows to cast them and they weren't that great to start with.
I've also shaved on the detrimental ETB lands but I still find some number of them good.
I'll probably end up cutting the "end of combat" cards as well in Flamerush Rider and Blade of Selves because of the awkward timing, but I just want to give them a bit more go before I give them the chop.

One thing that has worked really well is using the graveyard to battlefield type cards for bringing Obeka herself into play, They all give haste so you can end the turn before she gets exiled. It just means that she is actually really resilient in the deck. Far more than expected. Even Mimic Vat you can exile her with that and create a token copy of her that will stick around.

Felhide Spiritbinder is just way to slow.
Valakut Exploration has just been disappointing in general in decks I've tried. Oh well got to try.
I've cut back on the Wheel type card draw, I find myself tied up with spending mana most games.
I also just don't want legendary creatures for the sake of making token copy duplicates so cut Moraug, Fury of Akoum and Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion further.

I was playing a buddy of mine over the weekend and he had a good suggestion for my deck, which relies heavily on recurring creatures or making tokens and then keeping those creatures/tokens by skipping the end of turn triggers: Teferi's Veil. I'm not sure if your deck is set up to abuse it quite like mine, but I thought it was a good suggestion so I wanted to share it here.

Yeah I like this in general. Unfortunately it doesn't specifically help with the cards Blade of Selves or Flamerush Rider because those are attacking creatures and never actually attack.
But it does work with Araumi of the Dead Tide and all the other token generators as a great back up to Obeka. Phasing out also protects against sorcery board wipes which is pretty nice.

On a different subject Balefire Dragon becomes the number one source of dealing with opponents creatures most games. Now because of all the graveyard tutors (Buried Alive, Intuition, Entomb, Gravebreaker Lamia) having a single sliver bullet is fine, but I just wanted to add another way to deal with multiple creatures and so have chosen Inferno Titan. Sometimes opponents have a pesky flying blocker for Balefire Dragon, so clearing them out with Inferno Titan is a good additional way to deal with creatures.

I also replaced Thieving Skydiver with Hostage Taker as a way to deal with artifacts and now creatures as you are looking for ETB triggers rather than cast triggers with the deck setup.

For the reasons I mentioned with awkward interactions between using Obeka at times other the waiting until the end of turn I am getting rid of Blade of Selves and
Flamerush Rider.

I will also say the random 50/50 of Mirror March has been exceedingly miss for me so far which for 6 mana is kind of weak. I guess I am not Irish. I'm cutting it for not being reliable enough for such a high cost. Essentially you have to take a turn off and if you don't get lucky on the subsequent turns it's just a disaster.

I added Recall as a way to get cards back. Discard is good with reanimation and sometimes you can Intuition for Underworld Breach, Recall and then another card that you might actually need desperately.

Posting to follow the thread, but also because I did the same thing. Mirror March is garbage if you aren't manipulating the coin flips. Never paid off, can't believe it costs 6 mana for that effect.

I've had a lot of success and fun with this deck, although I play a lot of different decks so I haven't paid much attention to it in last month or so.

Of newish cards I think Rionya, Fire Dancer has the most potential but really needs cheap instant and sorcery to get proper use.

Oriq Loremage, Fervent Mastery, Harnfel, Horn of Bounty have potential to setup the graveyard for some of the reanimation effects.

I decided to take out the sorcery speed extra turn cards because they can be risky if opponents remove Obeka.
Teferi's Veil didn't work out.

Has Purphoros been working well for you? I really need more way to get haste into my deck and he seems like a pretty good add that can help cheat big dude into play that meet his restriction.

The haste is pretty good as a static ability because opponents will try hard to remove Obeka before you get to some end steps, so casting back out means you can manage detrimental effects better.
Red & artifact creatures only clause did have an effect on decision making so Inferno Titan, Balefire Dragon, Hellkite Tyrant, Dragon Mage are a reflection of Purphoros being in the deck. But even then the cost reduction is between 2-4 which is just fine.
I do think it's worth it even if it doesn't have the same efficiency and explosiveness as Sneak Attack.
