Last game of the night went pretty long, got to 17 from Nekusar stuff. basically the same story as any time I run into a group hug deck - I drew like 10 extra cards and achieved an insurmountable board state. Once Emeria, the Sky Ruin is online with Archaeomancer in the yard and Intuition and Ghostly Flicker in hand there's really not much else happening.

Generally speaking the proper intuition targets when going for the "I want palinchron" is : And the reason for not getting guide is that Recruiter of the Guard finishes the combo itself smoothly - guide if you're very mana constrained, but guide makes the combo depend more on having Intuition in the bin, so you can't have snapcaster'd it or anything.

Properly they should give you Reveillark or Palinchron but people usually give me recruiter of the guard (so I recruit for karmic guide, then guide for palinchron and gg's from there.

My win path from them giving me Palinchron is actually the most awkward - I have to stop the flicker loop after infinite mana and get Karmic Guide Charming Prince and Eldrazi Displacer with a recast of Intuition and then see what I can work out from there. Generally speaking I will still win the game from there since I can scry to Venser and win on the next upkeep, but it is cumbersome -- although I will have infinite life.

(The play there is to charming prince Archaeomancer, go to end step, get it back and get the flicker loop going at end step, gain infinite life then scry Venser, Shaper Savant to the top, then bounce the board during their upkeep).

I'm pretty impressed at how easily combo lines are coming together without Body Double which I was a bit nervous about. Having Salvager of Secrets has been better than I thought. Sometimes they are a bit more awkward, but Palinchron is a much better card on its own (because of its interactions with Soulherder effects, primarily).

sun titan continues to be an unholy beast - I won this last game by activating Emeria from 5 plains by titan'ing up two plains off of Thassa, Deep-Dwelling + Titan.

It is very interesting to me how commonly Sun Titan ramp is figuring prominently in games. I came back this game from missing *3* land drops due to having to take a very aggressive anti-wheel plan in the early game.

Nekusar did Waste Not into Dark Deal on turn 3, and I had no answer, so during my turn I topped into a white source, played Chrome Mox and was able to Hour of Revelation leaving myself with a lone Mox Diamond in hand.

I would have never come back into that game except that I knew Nekusar, the Mindrazer would fill my hand back up with cards, so I could take the risk to get waste not off the table.

Winds of Abandon was almost very good but got oofed by Teferi's Protection that I could have played around more carefully. Basically always have to play around that stupid thing.

My notes for the future:

* If we ever get an open sac outlet in white I believe I will play that. I am considering attempting Mirror Entity, as it's quite good on its own.

* Phyrexian Altar and Brought Back seem like they would likely be pretty good. Open sac outlets have proven to be very strong and altar makes mana. This might be something I try.

* Free counterspells continue to be absolutely great.

* Need to remember Phantasmal Image + Palinchron.

* I have some interest in maybe trying Spellstutter Sprite, Quickling and Vendilion Clique. Gotta revisit the old MTGS thread with the list of cool faeries. I suspect that that squad might be better than hatebears in an unpredictable meta. Whitemane Lion gets used to protect my dudes a lot, so maybe quickling would be good.

If you're playing a hatebears deck and power is not an issue, Aven Mindcensor is a must. The crippling asymmetrical effect it has, along with the flash flying body, is just too good to pass up on. It's actually most effective against green decks, but also very strong against black and against white.

The old 1-lander mulliganned into the old 4 lands, Gilded Drake, Sol Ring and Nadir Kraken. Not sure you get a better hand than that but one in a hundred games. And then we topdeck Spellseeker.

I slowplayed a little with running out Nadir Kraken for cards and was rewarded with hitting Recruiter of the Guard, and able to chain Spellseeker into victory as followse:

1. spellseeker for ephemerate
2. blink spellseeker for mystical tutor
3. mystical tutor for intuition
4. intuition for Archaeomancer + Palinchron + Ghostly Flicker with Recruiter of the Guard in the hand.

Whatever they give you you win from that point of recruiter + intuition --

If they give you Archaeomancer you recruiter for Karmic Guide and get Palinchron then Archaeomancer for Ghostly Flicker and the game

If they give you Palinchron you recruiter for Karmic Guide (or Salvager of Secrets ) and win

If they give you Ghostly Flicker (as they did) you play Recruiter of the Guard for Karmic Guide then ghostly flicker Palinchron + Karmic Guide, then you can recruit for venser.

Sol Ring is a heck of a magic card I guess, weird how often I have been seeing it lately.

(note: I am testing Aven Mindcensor over Eidolon of Rhetoric atm online, and so far it's been medium, but more likely to be cast than eidolon).

I think part of the issue is that much like with Hushbringer I have no sac outlets anymore and the Ghostly Flicker win is at odds with eidolon. I think ultimately I will probably make that change.
ephara-turn6.jpg
Some additional comments specifically on Nadir Kraken

* This card is very strong. It has some awkwardness, but fundamentally spending 5 mana for 3 cards + 2 x 1/1s and a 4/5 is really hard to argue with, which is about its average for me. People do kill it a lot but if one card draws me 3 and forces a sweeper or targeted removal I think that's victory.

* The awkwardness is primarily with mana rocks combined with its UU cost. More than once I have been annoyed that Azorius Signet was not Arcane Signet or Talisman of Progress because of how it messes with my sequencing. Sol Ring also is quite awkward with it. When you have a turn 2 Ephara and want to turn 3 kraken you can only get 1 dude - which is still alright but not the preference.

* I am fairly sure it's a permanent card. It wins the game on its own if you can protect it; after 3 turns of full activations you have a 15 squiddles and a 17/18 or whatever, and you've also drawn +12 cards for 18 mana or some odd, which is pretty reasonable. This deck in general does not topdeck as well as some midrange builds, so it's especially nice to have a card you can just go off with not requiring any synergy at all.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

And some additional comments re: single points of failure/fragility

Karmic Guide Venser, Shaper Savant and Palinchron are all single points of failure in the deck. It's becoming really obvious how absolutely critical all three of these cards are.

* Karmic Guide makes the Intuition packages work; having Guide in the deck makes Recruiter of the Guard + Reveillark work as intuition bait, and having access to Guide makes intuition almost idiot proof with Ghostly Flicker since you can always fix whatever with flickering guide.

* Venser, Shaper Savant is the only clear cut victory with infinite flickers; Eldrazi Displacer, Gilded Drake and Charming Prince can do a similar impression, with prince gaining infinite life and scry to answers, and Drake can prevent them from having any creatures forever. There are some problems with Gilded Drake in that it cannot be tutored for easily (muddle only). Other potential outs we have are to Phantasmal Image someone else's wincon, or to infinitely displace all the opponents' creatures. It is possible that we want Agent of Treachery over Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite in this iteration of the deck to help correct for this.

* Palinchron is, well, stupid cheat fish. Once it's gone we cannot do anything infinitely. It's the primarily single point of failure. I could play Cloud of Faeries or Peregrine Drake which would enable some infinites as well but I do not like how inflexible they are -- Palinchron being able to go infinite with a decent board and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx (7 pips of blue I believe?) or with Phantasmal Image are both great options.

Generally speaking if any of these 3 are exiled the option trees for winning become much narrower. I need to think a lot about how I feel about that. Obviously I can just go back to Cyclonic Rift every turn while I Sun Titan beat down or whatever, but that has some fragility as well.

To be fair it was fairly similar with Altar of Dementia as that combo was 100% dependent on altar and had no secondary options. In general I think this build is a bit more resilient.

*thus far* those weaknesses in the current build have not been an issue but I could easily envision a situation where someone say, Gonti, Lord of Luxury and hit my Palinchron and my avenues are suddenly very restricted.

If I were to want to correct these issues, there're a few approaches I could take:

* add something like Resolute Archangel to or Avacyn, Angel of Hope to give me some ways to race (avacyn+hour every turn for example) relatively fairly

* Add Temporal Manipulation so I can take infinite turns.

The pretty big advantage to manip is I can play it as a crappy rampant growth early game and still have it available.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And one last note to self: Phyrexian Metamorph is an e-tutorable clone and I really miss having access to that pretty regularly.

Just had a super intense almost 1v1 game vs Zacama, where I basically had to wrath Zacama every turn and won the game through Emeria, the Sky Ruin and Thassa, Deep-Dwelling.

The turning point was pretty interesting though, he had just slammed Zacama for like the 4th time and I had a misty rainforest in play, at 5 life, and I fetch Mystic Sanctuary to put Hour of Revelation back on top, which pretty much seals it though he does Zacama again he's never able to beat Thassa, Deep-Dwelling + Emeria, the Sky Ruin recurring Palinchron.

Only reason I write anything is mainly to say about how clutch Mystic Sanctuary and ultimately Weathered Wayfarer for enabling it was that game. Wayfarer tutored for probably 5 lands over the course of the game including emeria and the Misty Rainforest that lead to the sanctuary play.

So yeah, pretty happy with that card so far.

This was a game that I mulled to 5 keeping wayfarer, 3 lands and Azorius Signet and didn't see my first creature til turn 5 or so, floating with off Supreme Verdict and Hour of Revelation until the engine started humming.

Also the first game where Palinchron did fair stuff (being blinked with Thassa and stuff). I ultimately had the opportunity to use the image/palinchron combo but chose instead to steal his Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker with my Phantasmal Image as a gilded drake, then kill it with Thassa, Deep-Dwelling's ability. I had no infinite mana sink so no real way to win with the mana for once.

Was pretty pleased to see Palinchron just as good as a fair card as I thought, enabling me to out-mana the Zacama, Primal Calamity player who had cast probably 7 ramp spells and was cast Zacama, Primal Calamity for 15 mana off of pure lands.

Drannith Magistrate showed up there at the very end to add insult to injury but not much else since Emeria+Thassa was not going to lose to Zacama.

----------------------------------------------------------------

There was a very sweet sequence with a card I have not seen in a while Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir -- during my upkeep i reanimated palinchron with Emeria, the Sky Ruin , floated 7 mana, untapped the lands, then flashed in Teferi and Spellseeker with the mana, which was pretty cool I thought.

Palinchron is good.

Haven't posted a lot of loss reports because I don't lose often, but man I lost a squeaker today 100% to my own greed. Against 3 very strong decks (sharuum, riku and muldrotha).

I had a pretty dominant board state, and my critical decision was on a turn where I set this play up:
Charming Prince my Karmic Guide and then Hour of Revelation, setting up a chain of guys coming back.

Then I have choice for the last guide chain of either Recruiter of the Guard for Spellseeker as the safe play or Soulherder as the greedy play.

What did I do? I took the greedy play and muldrotha untaps and Genesis Wave's for 15, sealing the game. Ultimately Riku almost got us back into it but my inability to read the UI (which kept displaying my missing Linvala, Keeper of Silence which messed up my mana math on Nykthos) caused that to flop.

But fundamentally I had the game locked up. All I had to do was spellseeker for Cyclonic Rift and nothing is stopping me from winning that game.

Drannith Magistrate was very good in this game, shutting both Muldrotha and Riku out for quite a while. I think I killed Riku of Two Reflections four times that game :P

PLAY IT SAFE.

So, I am gonna give Cartographer's Hawk the benefit of the doubt - I had it in an opener where I would have gotten to slam it after t3 Ephara and then probably woulda ridden it to +3 lands. Against a Slivers player who had ramped like 4 lands. But HE DISCONNECTED! Doh. Finally would have gotten a good hawk outing and it was stolen.

This was a pretty typical 3-player game where I hounded the control player (Kess) mercilessly and kept them from being able to develop, locked out with a Glen Elendra Archmage + Thassa, Deep-Dwelling while the mono green Surrak, the Hunt Caller player didn't notice I was running away with the game until it was too late. To be fair I was in a lot of danger until the timely topdeck of Eldrazi Displacer (to be fair set up by 4 shuffles and Top).

The story of this game was Eldrazi Displacer + Gilded Drake vs green creatures. I was drawing a crapload of cards cos I gilded draked his Garruk's Packleader then kept displacing drake and drawing a card and taking his dudes, etc. I probably saw 50 cards in 10 turns, even though I didn't draw them all because of Sensei's Divining Top. That card is beastly I tellya.

The true MVP of this game though was Glen Elendra Archmage completely shutting out Kess whose Timetwister would have resolved and reset the entire thing.
ephara-displacer.jpg
End screen there is where I displacer-drake'd the serpopard so I could Forbid the Regal Force and keep him from restocking.

Another random note from the game:

Thassa, Deep-Dwelling's activated ability has saved my life a few times. It also saved me from losing all my ramp to Kogla, the Titan Ape this game.

It's not great, but it does the job. Once the game's down to 1v1 it's really hard for people to beat Thassa.

Huh, this card is real good.

I don't think I quite have room for it, but it's definitely worthy of consideration - but it's definitely the best white removal we've seen in a while. I do like that we could use it to turn a dead creature into a 4/4.

Probably really good in a token build of Ephara where you're likely to turn it on your own dudes in a pinch.

I point this out more because of the trend - I really like where they're going with white cards this set, pushing at the bounds.

I also really like the design of this card for Ephara build who is using more counters and possibly sac outlets. I like it with Mikaeus, the Lunarch and Archangel of Thune a lot.

Note that this doesn't say non-token. So with Cathars' Crusade and cards like Cauldron of Souls you can get some really cool stuff going on.

I am floored at the thought of you slotting out Norn, but I guess you really are going for the blink synergy style rather than a hatebear one.

What are your thoughts of new Teferi?

Norn has been really medium online. I rarely cast it. It's nice having another infinite blink outlet that wins.

New Teferi is pretty good, very high velocity seeing so many cards in a turn cycle, and pretty low threat. I think it's potentially playable. I like the instant speed removal option as well, pretty nice.

Snuck a game in over lunch and my awesome hawk setup was ruined by someone Supreme Verdicting to kill Jodah, my cartographer hawk and weathered wayfarer. Then scooping midway through the game :P THANKS ATRAXA.

I do really see the potential of hawk but it has some really awkward sequences.

This game was largely carried by Glen Elendra Archmage and Thassa, Deep-Dwelling lock. I didn't even e-tutor for thassa, I e-tutor'd for a top which dug me to Glen Elendra. The archmage is *soooo* good with Thassa. You can counter one thing a turn, draw a card, then reset her. It's beautiful.

I absolutely adore Thassa, Deep-Dwelling. She's such a good card and just puts in tons of work every time I see her.

Bit of a scoop fest today, got knocked to 14 by hasted dudes, ruric thar and 12 damage from mana crypt -- to be fair I had a pretty dominant opener (mana crypt talisman ponder emeria).

Something to be really cautious about against this build is trading Gilded Drake and putting it in the yard. Admittedly they were a wee bit boned anyway since I also had Eldrazi Displacer - but I was able to Sun Titan back a drake which closed the game out.

Eldrazi Displacer continues to be really, really good. I was able to stop Edgar Markov from attacking with Edgar (he accidentally let it go to the command zone, but that really had no bearing on the game at all), and threaten to Gilded Drake basically forever. They would up in a situation where they needed to kill Sun Titan and Eldrazi Displacer simultaneously or end up with drake stealing everything. Thankfully a pretty colorless heavy draw (adarkar, nykthos, mana crypt and a talisman) to enable displacing.

Generally speaking I think people scoop too early in MTGO sometimes, as being at 14 if they had worked together I very well could have died before I killed them - Mana Crypt alone had me on a pretty serious clock, and I had no way to gain life.

Not having any way to reset on life other than stealing/copying other people's stuff or flickering Charming Prince continues to be a bit of a concern for me but I can usually play around it. I do think Selfless Squire as a Recruiter of the Guard target will help me buy some virtual life.

I am really interested in what Agent of Treachery does for you. I have considered it and I think it has some real potential if the mana cost isn't a huge drawback.

Selfless Squire is super good as well. I wouldn't say she has won me nearly as many games as Resolute Archangel but the ability to just flicker her and the fact that she stops *all* damage and not just combat damage is a big part of why I like her. I wouldn't think you would be disappointed to see her. She isn't quite as needed in a combo-y build like yours so I get why you hadn't gotten to her before now, but I think she can work to buy you some time.

And yeah, tonight was a scoopfest :( Had 2 people scoop early in my Marchesa game. Not sure what it is in general.

I'm having better luck lately when I start the room. Takes a little longer but more prepared folks. But I didn't have time to wait earlier so jumped in and had two scoops games today.

I think agent will be very good. I have been making tons of mana lately, and seen a lot of spots where it would fix problems. I wish it was a 2/2 but can't be helped.

I am kinda starting to wonder if the palinchron lines are even necessary. I can see up such advantage steam rolls with so many cards now I think I might be better off focusing the combo cards on making mana and closing the game..

I find games where I do sun titan fetchland stuff are almost always the most dominant victories. So thinking about maybe ramping harder. Although palinchron does do great at ramp sometimes even fairly with soulherder etc.

More noodling to do I guess.

Eventually, you will slot Knight of the White Orchid over Hawk, and once that happens you will not be able to understand how you tried to stick with it for so long.
I'm not sure of the cause and the effect in the relationship between power ramping and winning. It could be that power ramping makes it more likely to win, but it could also be that you were already winning, and simply power ramping amongst doing other more meaningful things.

Frankly, with land shenanigans, I'm thinking you'll like Emeria Shepherd more and more. True, it doesn't bring back instants / sorceries, but you have plenty to do that already, and now you can bring back everything else!

I think it's probably still worse than hawk in this deck with the ability to repeatedly trigger in long games and able to actually enable Ephara without any supplemental creatures, but I will put it on the list. I think Dowsing Dagger // Lost Vale is probably a better first choice in this deck for ramping swords.

Both are ultimately worse than Sword of Feast and Famine but that draws a lot more anger. Nobody ever removes animist.

I think you're probably right, though I might try it in addition to. Pearl Medallion has been a real boat anchor the last few times I've seen it, really only doing work with two cards and less relevant to combo turns, so I might swap that out.

I do love me some emeria shepherd. It's really strong. I don't think it's as good without a sac outlet, and definitely don't want to be even more exposed to grave hate at 7 drop slot.

Hey, at least it flickers fine. Its sad that its so much to ask for this in white when green gets this for less mana on better creature types when Disenchant was originally a white effect.

I can't help but feel like it could have cost less or had better stats for the mana though to be honest.

It coulda been 5/5 with lifelink and not been overpowered :(

Cavalier of Dawn absolutely crushes this already at this rate.

I guess I did overlook Cavalier as a comparison. It is hard to compare a common to a mythic though. I think my preference would have been to shift it to a four drop without other changes but yea... it probably could have used a little tuning up.

I think in a world where white gets Reclamation Sage and Indrik Stomphowler there wouldn't be a problem. As you said, Common vs Mythic is a huge difference.

But I am disappointed too that they started with the Stomphowler and didn't do anything with an uncommon to rival Rec Sage. The two colors are supposed to be pretty close in the effect so throwing it on a white weenie body seems on brand for white.

Maybe some day (and, hell, maybe this set since we haven't seen it all yet) we can get our 3 drop in white.

I'm actually hoping for a couple of things in the recent sets:
- Commander Legends: good consistency tools, good removal
- Zendikar: giant white / blue bombs, obnoxious landfall value engines

The more I think about it, the more Admonition Angel pops up to me. Gorgeous art, decent beatstick, and with Walking Atlas / Knight of the White Orchid / Cartographer's Hawk / Brought Back shenanigans it can remove entire boards. Plus it has that WWW to make Nykthos awesome and Ephara a creature.

My wishlist is (currently, stream of thought):

* Narrow creature tutor (humans!!! Fliers second choice)
* Leonin relic-warder but permanent for 1WW, recruiterable
* Collector Ouphe
* More Venser, Shaper Savant / Spell Queller effects that let us beat uncounterable spells with creatures. Even just a Mystic Snake would be alright.
* Wood Elves but go ahead and let it etb tapped to make it worse
* A hatebear that efficiently limits activated abilities - asymmetric suppression field on a creature ideally.
* Windborn Muse but recruiterable (Forbidding Spirit is close).
* Another functional copy of Unexpectedly Absent (maybe a UW version that puts it 3rd from the top)

I do dig your idea of a landfall package, feels like it could be good with Emeria Angel if you had maybe one or two more pieces that could get the landfall making creatures at instant speed.

Druidic Satchel might be playable in such a build also.

Hope this comes through well enough but I heard a rumor about barrin and it looks fairly insanely good. Recruiterable back up ca engine that acts as tempo removal.

Not 100% sure I play that but feels pretty likely to to be worth a try. Its failure mode is a 0 for 2 for 3 Mana assuming it can bounce itself but it's sequencing where it bounces recruiter has a lot of advantages.
