I'm wondering what people's thoughts on this card is in the cedh format. while many decks don't revolve around their commander, i feel like having this card can stall them from getting added value or drawing removal that would be meant for other key pieces.

The Magistrate I feel is quite powerful. It is a hate bear, but it shuts down playing from your library and your graveyard. Both very important for a lot of various decks. I think that is more powerful than just shutting off the commander.

A great card that punishes removal-lite decks that depend on their Commander. I'm a fan of it personally because it forces cEDH decks to adjust their priorities if they depend on their Commanders. For example, Tymna decks that can't access Tymna look REALLY pathetic in game plan since they depend so heavily on Tymna's trigger to keep their Card Advantage flowing. Remove that pillar of their deck... and if they don't have removal or a tutor for the Magistrate... I think they'll have a really tough time being relevant in that game.

Which is exactly what my Kaalia list is looking forward to. I'm still waiting for my pre-order to be fulfilled, but I fully expect the Magistrate to be an excellent card that shifts the cEDH meta (even if it's only slightly).

Will some people boo-hoo because their $1000+ deck got shut off by a $10 card? Of course. My response? "Well, let's take a look at your decklist and see how we can add a few more pieces of removal. Also, go find your manhood/womanhood."

Stax decks differentiate excellent players and deckbuilders from good netdeckers.

I understand playing from the graveyard but what cards actually allow you to play from deck? also i just realized that this also middle fingers food chain combo, companions, and is another lock piece for mirror pool until they can remove the magistrate. Man i really need to find a card to replace for it in my Sisay deck >.>

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter, Maelstrom Wanderer are couple of other fringe-ish examples in competitive (although wanderer is not from library, just another non-GY example).

The only real question is whether its good enough? I mean its terrible as a top deck if commanders have already been played. So I feel like its better in a deck that has solid creature removal, rather than purely relying on it to hit the table before commanders are played out.

In cEDH if you can't get advantages out of your commander (and companions if applies) then you are probably losing out on a lot, Really there are not many cEDH decks that don't use their commander in a big way. Not to say they can't win without them, but 8/10 games you are going to want your commander(s) to give you leverage in the game.

Should Drannith Magistrate be an automatic include for splash White decks, in the same way that Aven Mindcensor is?
I'm not talking about relatively heavy creatures decks, say 20 or more, that would more than likely see it included.
I'm talking about those that are often more like 5-10 creatures. I don't think its quite as cut and dry as that, but certainly control decks can manage its ability far better as removal becomes that much better when you can remove a commander and know that Drannith Magistrate will prevent them from recasting it straight away.
At this stage I feel like splash White is going to see a 50/50 split between including it or not.
