It would appear today people figured out that you should buy up the other cliche internet stuff like pasta and canned goods. They haven't figured out that rice, which is right next to the pasta on the shelves, is also edible. Toilet paper once again wiped out, after it went back up for a bit. I guess that's what exponential disease growth does to people. Just stay indoors, avoid contact and wait this out, I guess.

I've got about two kilos of cereal stockpiled, worst comes to worst. Pretty easy to eat, and long life :P

I noticed the same and grabbed a bag when I was there yesterday. The latest trend I've read about is people buying out all the produce. Literally the shortest shelf life food available. Oy. . . the mind boggles.

I don't get it, because in a few days the mass hysteria will be over and stores will be restocked.

You say that, but it took two months of draconic sanctions for stuff to calm down in China. Europe is largely very delayed with its measures by contrast, haven't been following America. It'll ultimately be fine, but we're up for a few grim months. Hopefully people adjust to self-isolation and stop cleaning out shelves from random hype products, as it's annoying :P

Famous last words I guess, but I really don't think it will be anything like it was in China here in the States. Yeah, we need to be cautious and minimize social contact to essentials and all, but our infrastructure and economy are night and day different from China's. I really think @cryogen is right, the stores will get restocked pretty dang quick. Charmin, Quilted Northern, Dasani, Aquafina, Kroger, Walmart, etc. etc. are going to ramp the supply chain and manufacturing side of things up big time for the foreseeable future and make an absolute killing for their bottom lines.

Again, I could be very wrong, but I think the stores were pants pretty good over the last several days, but they'll bounce back and have several layers of contingency moving forward until this passes.

As a country, New Zealand has been very lucky so far. 8 confirmed cases thus far. I can't help but be really angry though; literally every single case we've had has been brought in from people traveling and thought 'it'll be fine I'm not that sick'. Almost all of them have ignored advice and gone to work/church/ a freaking Tool concert during their illness. As far as I'm concerned whatever heat they cop from friends, family and social media they absolutely deserve for being so careless with other people's' health. My firstborn is due in early May so the wife and I are pretty anxious about how all of this plays out. We're both pretty introverted though so chances are we won't see too many people in the coming months.

The big concern for me is work. My wife works in an early childhood centre and I work in a private oncology suite. Her work is already a hotbed of grossness because that's just kids. Mine isn't, but we're in a pretty unfavorable position - if we close doors, people die. If we keep business running we cannot allow even a single foothold of infection, because if our patients get it they die. We've been fine so far but ideally this infection goes no further, or things get super messy.

The whole shopping hysteria seems to have died down somewhat for us. I think people figured out they could still buy online.

For me, the worst of it hit my area at the same time we needed to go grocery shopping anyways (and ended up with two days of whatever we could find at the store for meals). I wasn't prepared for the level of chaos that happened here, because we haven't really had buyout problems until Friday. I guess the church closing down spooked everyone.

We ran out of bread at our local....bread. Literally the most perishable item available. Not sure if the mania caused panic induced stupidity or most of the population are just stupid.

You can freeze bread, and it survives the process reasonably well. So it's not quite as silly as stockpiling toilet paper.

The lonesomeness of my self-imposed lockdown is starting to get to me. I'm quite introverted by nature, but losing the game night tonight coupled with not having had my typical mini-exchanges with the servers at subway or something through the week is starting to pile up. Anybody got any professional tips how to get around this?

I guess so, it still seems a bit ridiculous but you're not wrong. Oh well.

Hmmm, I don't get that at all. I'm very much an introvert that doesn't like socialising outside of a really small social circle in the best of situations, so I don't think I'd handle self-isolation too poorly.

I guess I'd suggest doing whatever makes you relaxed and zen - I read books and play music, those both chill me out nicely. Otherwise, get on the phone/skype and call up some loved ones.

edit: how did I forget cats? I've got two and they're awesome company that doesn't require dialogue or conversation. They've seen me through a lot of anxiety, depressive episodes and just general stress.

I know how you feel. If I spend too long not going out and seeing somebody, I stop handling things so well. Do you have somebody you can--as much as I dislike doing it myself--call or Skype? It's not as good as seeing someone in person and being introverted can make phone calls hard, but it might be enough to get you through this period.

I would also generally recommend calling a friend or loved one, but the problem with that at the moment is that almost anyone you call will want to talk about almost nothing besides current events, and that's unlikely to be much of an upper. Perhaps call someone whom you can trust to agree to the stipulation that you'll chat with them about anything other than the stupid virus and ensuing nonsense? Just a thought.

On a totally unrelated note: My family started a DND campaign fairly recently that I am DMing for my wife, daughter (14), and son (8) and I'm interested in hearing some feedback about other folks' experiences. We're about 4 sessions in and it has been quite fun thus far, but there have been some barriers to fun. Specifically, I've got to 1) find a way as the DM to keep the story and action moving right along without expecting too much from my young players in terms of roleplay or plot/character development and 2) help everyone overcome the steep learning curve with the rules and mechanics (reminds me of magic's steep rules curve tbh: tough to grasp at first but second nature once you've got it down pat) so we're not doing the whole "ah, crap! Which number is Spell save DC again?" or "Let me look up the rules for sneaking real quick". Any solid tips or rules of thumb for burgeoning DND players? I'm happy to share any details of our characters and campaign, but I don't want to bore you to tears if you don't want to read about it!

A good thought, although I don't know if it's necessarily a given that everybody will only want to talk about current events. Doesn't hurt to ask for it to not dominate the conversation though. I would probably talk awhile about the decks I spent the morning rebuilding. That's just due to how it's still on my mind I suppose.

I'm working on a setup for doing paper commander remotely via webcam+Discord with some folks.

And some folks I play board games with are exploring stuff like Tabletopia for simulating the game while using something like Discord for group voice.

I got my computer set up for streaming paper Magic, and played my first game last night. I'm not the least bit technically inclined, but it was fairly straightforward (and free) to set up the required software: Discord, Twitch, and OBS. Pretty sure that if you just want to play all you need is Discord, the cam and mike, but I want to stream as well.

====

The game itself was pretty good. 3.5 hours in and between someone else's Mesmeric Orb and my own Secrets of the Dead I was down to 12 cards in my library. MO opponent had something that made me mill 3 during my upkeep, binning a Puppeteer Clique. Cast that off Muldrotha, drawing a card (8 cards in library), got an opponent's Thassa's Oracle. Devotion to blue was now 11.

Ha! God that would have been hilarious. She had it set up in a perfect spot where it would have been visible if I were using a reaction cam. And I wouldn't have seen it at all. But it was a fun game. That Clamilton dude was a beast, and with Training Grounds and Umbral Mantle it was doing serious work. Pretty much everyone got their beats in and impacted the game. I was casting Muldrotha for 14 by the end and making Elks as fast as I could.

(For context, my wife hid a naked barbie doll behind me thinking the camera would be on me and it would be in the shot - which it totally would have.)

Well, changes aplenty to start my week. Work is limiting all contact between staff and patients and the outside world. Phone consultations instead of face to face, nurses will potentially have protective suits and limited support crews to come in with patients. And as well as that for at least some of the week I'll be working remotely. Which I guess is nice in some ways. I get more time with my cats, so that's nice.

As well as that my wife's uncle and cousin's partner just passed away last night. One in a car accident, the other had a heart attack on the way to the accident. Like, damn. Māori traditional funeral, so it'll be 5 days with the body not left alone. On top of that some of the family will be coming from overseas in Australia, so there's the question of whether the person in question self quarantines or throws caution to the wind, which means I need to question whether I attend or not, same with my wife.

Moral dilemmas in 2020 are not f#%king around.

A friend of mine has been posting on social media a lot about The Stand for obvious reasons. She wakes up this morning and Idris Elba, the Gunslinger, now has CoVid-19. I think she feels like she's tempted fate with the jokes a bit much.

The Dark Tower movie was terrible, but nonetheless.

I've never seen The Dark Tower,i do however want to read it or at least the book that ties The Stand into it. If you REALLY want to watch it (the Stand) it's on youtube all parts.

The Dark Tower is worth a read. More or less the whole series of 7 tie into The Stand at least to some degree. As well as Insomnia, The Talisman and Black House, Hearts in Atlantis (Low men in Yellow Coats story) directly, maybe others too (edit: possibly Desperation and the Regulators), I can't remember though. It's considered King's magnum opus to some degree, insofar as most of it is pretty well written and it has overarching themes that tie a lot of his stories into the wider story arc.

Don't see the movie. Even if you haven't read the books the movie is pretty awful. Which is interesting considering how bad some of King's adaptations have been.

edit: I've seen the Stand. It's not bad. I prefer the book though.

I hope the Cornavirus hasn't screwed over the new miniseries they are working on for CBS all access.
