Anyone seen The Green Knight? My girlfriend and I left the theater unsure of how we felt about it beyond the gorgeous visuals.

Its on my list of things to do in the next two weeks. The visuals are what are driving me to see it but I will let you know how I feel it went.

I saw it last week, first time in a theater in 18 months. As you say the cinematography was beautiful and the acting from Dev Patel was excellent. I am also unsure of how I feel about the story though.

Though I understood the ending to be his thoughts about how his life would play out if he ran, I was wondering more about why Gawain's mother would put that plan into motion in the first place. Some explanation there would have possibly made this more satisfying.

I built a General Ferrous Rokiric deck kind of on a lark recently. It was just because my dog's name is Ferrous. Shockingly, the deck turned out to be pretty fun. I originally wanted all Boros spells, but I'd never ramp or draw cards that way, so I made some exceptions there. I repurposed my meh Adriana, Captain of the Guard deck for it, and ended up keeping a few cool/powerful mono-colored spells just to smooth it out. It can get out of hand fast, and was surprisingly agile in dealing with changing board states.

Updating the deck will be easy too, as searching for new WR cards in a set probably will never take that long. It's also been cool finding homes for cards that either used to see a lot of play (Brion Stoutarm), I've always ended up cutting (Basandra, Battle Seraph), or are rather bad but end up being pretty good in this deck (Foundry Champion).

Startin a new job 8/30, first career change in almost 15 years. Taking a huge leap and going to work at a startup from a gigantic healthcare behemoth. Pretty excited but accepting all positive vibes :)

I am starting down the path of doing the same. Been with my company for 15 years as well but potentially looking for a change. It can be a bit nerve-wracking but exciting at the same time. So, good luck in your new position! :)

I got headhunted by a startup a buddy of mine went to and when I told them how much I wanted and they didn't laugh at me, I knew I was going to have to change jobs :( My company is giving us 2.5-3% raises year over year and it just isn't keeping up - I got my last big raise possible without moving into management about two years ago.

Everyone I know is switching jobs and getting 20-30% right now minimum. I got almost 60% including stock options (which obviously you have to take with a grain of salt).

Wages for IT are absolutely through the roof. I can't recall what your field is but if it's any kind of skilled labor, now is a great time.

@pokken

That is better than my company. We had 2 years so far of no merit increases due to Covid and while they have promised them to be reinstated this year, we too have always gotten 2-3% which isn't enough. I don't really know where my salary lies in comparison to the market (which is part of the reason I am looking) but I have seen some job postings offering 10-50% more than I am making now. Though, as I am a programmer looking at general programming/software engineer jobs, there are sometimes specific skillsets that I just don't have that they want so it is hard to make a 1 to 1 comparison.

But I did hear that my company is having a hard time getting people to fill the open positions they have which is one of the reasons I decided to start looking. I figured if my company is having a hard time with that, others would be as well so there might be room for negotiating some higher salary options. Or, honestly, just using this to negotiate a higher salary at my current company.

That seems like a pretty ideal situation for you though and while startups are not always the most stable, the potential with them is huge.

Oof :(

2-3% is below what real inflation is right now so at 1% you're taking a massive paycut every year. That's miserable.

On a somewhat related note, my friend and I have a podcast where we interview people who are in creative professions/are working towards quitting day jobs to pursue their passions. We're always looking for guests, so if anyone interested, shoot me a DM.

Finally got around to adding all the decks I built in the Sally days, plus the ones I built before I posted at all (w/o decklist links), to my signature. Looks like my total is 158. Not too shabby.

Holy gods I've spent a lot of time on this hobby. It's really a shame these skills aren't remotely marketable.

I'm really starting to hate playing against enchantment decks, I'm hella salty right now. I was playing against an Amareth, the Lustrous deck. He cast it turn 5 and then next turn he slapped Ancestral Mask and Battle Mastery on it to insta-gib me before I got my turn 6. Then, it ate a Doom Blade and the game stalled out for over an hour. Cool. Glad you guys are having fun without me, I definitely didn't want to play any magic this evening. :madhot:

Watching him churn through his deck with Amareth, the Lustrous triggers is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring. I hate how every deck can just be a pseudo-eggs deck now. Building this way monopolizes game time soooooooooo much. Need that snore emoji.

I feel that. One of the guys in our group has a Rafiq deck that's does this all the time, particularly when the rest of us are tuning decks or trying out new builds. It's annoying because we're left with the options of using all our early removal on him and effectively rendering him unable to ever win, or having a few of us get picked off early so we have to sit and wait.

In part it's just a variant of "I'm going to do this thing and if you don't have an answer right now you're dead" that's harder to interact with. In general I think effects have just gotten too powerful and people are moderating less.

But there's also enchantments just being the most difficult thing to interact with which is frustrating.

Annd the most frustrating thing of all I think is that it's now become socially acceptable to just kill one person - I like that in a way, because people used to be too passive, but nowadays it's very common for me to just be aggro'd out of a game early because person thinks I will be the most likely to stop them.

The game has definitely become just a bit more competitive if that makes sense? The ethos of a game of commander is sliding pretty hard toward CEDH in terms of *how* people (and to an extent *what* they play as well:P).

You can obviously just "play more removal" (which is the EDH version of "Git gud scrub") but yeah. That starts the slide into interacting with everything and interacting with interaction and then 50% of decks are removal and counterspells.

Meh. I dunno, just a bit of a ramble, I don't have any prescription, I just have been seeing games constantly ending very fast now as well and I don't love it :)

Getting insta-gibbed by a dragon with two auras is super fair. I didn't care about that. What was frustrating was that he was first player, so everyone was tapped out doing early game stuff when he randomly gibbed me. Specifically, I would have had a flying blocker up if I'd gone before him. On top of that the previous turn I specifically decided against attacking him with my Spellbound Dragon + Darksteel Colossus discard because I thought that'd be kinda rude to chunk someone that badly this early (I obliterated an irrelevant Liliana instead).

So 1) I hate playing games of magic where the die roll is immensely important, and it's the primary reason I died there
2) I had specifically decided to be nice and not mash him for 14 the previous turn
3) I got insta-gibbed out of nowhere
4) The game went on for another couple of hours without me, so I didn't get a second game in
5) Watching enchantress decks hog gametime is painful for my eyes

It's less that and more every single one is just "Imma cast Setessan Champion and then durdle around taking forever to finish my turns because I'm casting a bunch of crap that doesn't really advance the game and takes forever to resolve." Pseudo-eggs snorefest that does nothing original and hogs game time.

Love me some 12-17 turn slug fests. That's my jam. Way less than that probably feels too explosive and more than that turns into "someone please kill everyone already".

I've found that I can condense my desired experience into "I'd like to be able to tap out (early-mid game) and not have to worry about immediately dying. I would like my opponents' wincons to be preventable with spells outside of exactly Counterspell."

The Storm model of enchantress decks is...soooo boring. "just play everything cheap that's decent and stack some storm enablers and go to town." Wheeehooo.

I started building my enchantress decks as higher power per enchantment and higher curve, so I could just use the best of the best enchantresses as occasional card draw.

Monopolizing game time remains the cardinal EDH sin in my opinion.

I know you're salty. I would be too in that situtation.
But #1 reason you lost was not because of die roll. I get peeved when people blame game losses on rng. You lost because your opponent has this super swingy deck.
And I am not saying I would leave up removal in that situation, but the next time I play against the person I for sure would leave up removal. I get that they were two powerful auras but that's still an opportunity for a 3 for 1.
Also you had a flyer but you attacked with it. Not sure how the die roll played into this.

# 2 - you played politics, but didn't. I know I tend not to do this but you can tell the person - I can hit you for a ton here but if you don't attack me next turn I will aim at someone else instead.

# 3 - yep, and next time you will leave your defences up.

# 4 - That's the worst! If this is a regular group I might suggest having a conversation on how to avoid this kind of scenario. Like not one-shotting someone early in the game.

#5 - I don't see how it is worse than Mishra Eggs or High Tide or Chullane triggering for an eternity. I guess you should play some Rule of Law effects if you hate it so much!

was reading through Kendra Smith's Trelasarra list and wondering how people'd react to it? My own take on the commander (WIP, no full list yet) is becoming more trinket-y and reactive, with Glare of Subdual and Bind and Abeyance effects to stop people comboing off when they play a tutor. we've got a lot of the same utility lifegain bits like Scavenging Ooze and Blind Obedience but Kendra's deck is more of a singular purpose thing and contains infinite combos. I like games going longer, attacking, not seeing players win on a single busy turn etc... No judgment on the build, don't wanna say there's right and wrong ways of building a deck, but I was wondering, as a commander player yrself, would you rather play vs win quick.dec or stop people winning quick.dec?

Dragon Shield now lets you make customized sleeves - pictures, art, whatever.
It is pretty pricy but very cool.

I am just not sure what to do about using art without paying any kind of royalty. Is it okay because I am not making money off of it? Is DS the ones that need to be careful? Or is it theft?
Can I use Alan Lee's lord of the rings art?
Can I take an image from a movie?
Can I grab someone's art from their online portfolio?

I feel like we went from a time where you could do whatever you wanted to a time where people are (rightfully) pushing against theft of art.

I feel like some popular uses will be;
- Using official MtG art and putting it on good sleeves (vs the Ultra Pro sleeves which are not as good).
- Memes
- Pictures - family, pets, famous people

I have a lot of ideas, but since I can't figure out how I feel about using other people's IP without permission I don't know what to do.

Decided to take a shot at getting legend in hearthstone again. At diamond I had to shelve my homebrew - crafted a combo demonhunter deck yesterday morning because it was supposed to be so hard to play that it was only good for high legend players (and yeah it's real hard tbh). Rode that to diamond 5 last night, figuring I'd take a break for a bit since I've got life stuff to deal with, and take up the climb in a few days. Then woke up today and blizzard is nerfing my new 24-hour-old deck into the damn ground. So now I've got one day to get to legend or I'll have to craft a completely new deck.

Really gives me some appreciation for wotc's predictable ban announcements.

EDIT: and we're back in lockdown, two days before I was going to move. And my dad may have had a stroke - he's going through tests.

What a %$#% day.

Damn, hope everything is okay Dirk.

We moved during the lockdown last year. Movers were considered essential workers.
I had to install my own alarm system though, they weren't allowed in my house.
