Ah, c'mon, I was hoping the Final Fantasy dude would be something more spectacular.
At any rate, Bahamut is very interesting as a concept, because once he gets 7 loyalty counters he stops being a planeswalker and thus no longer loses loyalty to damage nor be attacked, but can still use his loyalty abilities.

But still, I wish he was at least a DFC, so we can have art of his Dragon form on the other side.

do we think they're slow-rolling a set of dual lands, or a rainbow land, or something? or are we relying on Treasure to cast this stuff?

edit:
mana
gold cards

probably isnt actually a problem in limited, since concentrated mana appears more often than gold does. I'm just constantly on my "reprint Gemstone Mine" beat

There's only one land left to spoil, and a few artifacts. Dual lands are out, a rainbow land or a manalith variant is still possible.

Asmodeus the Archfiend is one I'm glad is just a rare and not mythic since I forsee a bit of demand for it.

Kind of a 2nd copy of Necropotence or budget replacement for that card to some degree.

Rounding out the last of the spoilers....
  • Loyal Warhound is Knight of the White Orchid version 2.0. Only a single pip makes it more splashable, and I imagine any deck running one will want to also run the other - the more you have of this effect, the easier it is to build around.
  • Asmodeus the Archfiend is the Necropotence to Griselbrand's Yawgmoth's Bargain. Asmodeus does look a lot clunkier to use - needing to pay mana to get your cards is a pretty significant cost, and if Asmodeus dies you lose all the exiled cards. As a result, I'd say Asmodeus looks pretty fair, and possibly even underpowered. That said, 'BBB: draw seven cards' is an extremely powerful line of text, so will probably end up seeing pay. At six mana, he's also pretty castable.
  • Priest of Ancient Lore is mildly interesting as a white creature that cantrips on ETB - the closest I can think of is Thraben Inspector, and there aren't many others. A nice option to add to any mono-white blink decks, which currently tend to lack good blink targets.
  • Thieves' Tools is mildly interesting as a cheap source of evasion, but Trailblazer's Boots is probably superior in most situations.
  • Check for Traps is more of a Standard card, but it's an interesting option to have in the meta.
Overall, I'm happy with the set at first glance - lots of D&D flavor, and the various mechanics look to have plenty of support. Venture into the dungeon is somewhat parasitic, but there are enough cards (and they're costed aggressively enough) that I expect it to show up in EDH. Classes and d20 rolling are also cool, and good flavor. The set as a whole seems a little powered down, but that's not necessarily a bad thing given how many bannings there have been in the last few years. I'll need to take a look through to see what cards I'm interested in, but there are at least a few cool things.

I was considering adding some of the classes to Narset, personally. Cleric Class, Monk Class, Paladin Class, Sorcerer Class, Wizard Class would be likely. Barbarian Class doesn't seem likely, unsure on Fighter Class due to last ability.
The last level of Fighter Class doesn't allow creatures to block your evasive commander, if that's what you're worried about. It actually allows for some soft evasion - if you attack with a token or something else, you can force a creature to block the token instead of your commander. That said, if you don't have any other creatures in your deck, it won't exactly be doing much in the first place.
...That is true. I've got some token creation in there. 👍

Loyal Warhound is the obligatory "We swear we're trying to help white in EDH" card.

Asmodeus the Archfiend requires you to go through enough hoops to not be too obnoxious of a card. Probably maybe.

Temple of the Dragon Queen is a budget color fixer for Tiamat/The Ur-Dragon...Though those 2 cards are pricier than most good color fixing lands to begin with so...yeah. What budget?

Looking at Varis, Silverymoon Ranger and realizing that I really love it when the put the text "This ability triggers only once each turn" on a card, and wishing they would do it a lot more. In his case, it incentivizes cool things like flash creatures and gradual value, instead of vomiting out a creature storm.

The [leak] tag exists, please use it when appropriate. Like now.

As for the "once a turn" valve, I appreciate the use of it for limiting power of designs. I find it a bit clunky, as it reminds me of the guy in my group who busts out Marchesa, sets up a sac loop, and only does it in his turn because yes, but I can nevertheless respect the design goal. However, its earliest emergence has been on white catch-up cards, a place I feel it has no reason being. Part of Smothering Tithe's appeal is that when a foe goes nuclear and draws 50 cards, you get reimbursed for it and rubber-banded into some level of relevance. Meanwhile as I tested Mangara, the Diplomat, an opponent chained together some draw spells, a tutor and a wipe, and all I got for it was a solitary card draw (a basic Plains, to add insult to injury :P ). Recent cards like Esper Sentinel and Monologue Tax continue leaning into this angle, and this is deliberate as per MaRo.

There's a difference between discussing officially spoiled content, and talking about unauthorised leaks. Still, people want to talk about this sort of stuff, so [leak] exists.
Unofficial Spoiler Discussion
I'd hold off on judging the cards until we get official reveals. The initial translation is beyond horrible, and while it seems to have improved a bit since it might still be worth waiting.

Assuming the reddit translation on the leaks are accurate:

https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comme ... _japanese/

RG dragon looks obnoxiously powerful at first blush. Maybe I'm overreacting but generating a ton of mana with haste like that scares me.

Esper dude seems pretty hard to set up. You need other creatures to tap to use him, and then if he dies you lose everything. Idk it just seems like a lot of work, and it's not like your opponents won't see it coming. I feel like I'd rather just play merieke if I really wanted to play esper theft. Way fewer moving parts, less unlikely magic christmasland scenarios.

RB seems like the most fun (as usual tbh). Bit of value, bit of chaos. I dig it.

Bant giant seems...really bad? You're paying 7 for a guy who just shrinks and enlarges one creature on attack? Maybe I'm missing something but it seems really underwhelming for that sort of cost. This ain't limited, a 7/7 isn't that big of a deal and there's usually a lot fewer small attacks - tends to be big or nothing. Plus he does nothing on the defense in combat, and whatever removal you're using against him is probably still going to cost a lot less than 7 even with an extra 3 tagged on.

The restriction lets the cost be lower. Esper Sentinel has been an insane amount of value from a 1-drop in my experience thus far.

I think I'd rather have it cost 1 and be once per turn than cost 2 and be unlimited. The difference between T1 and T2 is very significant.

Totally apart from how good or bad the cards are in EDH I just love these showcase cards so much, the illustration style is just so dead on my style.
Oswald Fiddlebender and Volo'll be big, anyway, from what I know about players to whom playing optimized decks matters
