Well dangit. I'd been doing so good not exceptionally wanting any cards, and then Ignoble Hierarch shows up to steal a spot in the Jund shaman deck I've been threatening to build for like 5 years.

Dragon's Rage Channeler seems like very strong card filtering for spellslinger decks, and potentially setting up your graveyard is not nothing.
Excuse me, but imho, I wasn't butting into anything. Notice that I quote someone else and only the portion about the rules. I didn't know that I had to read posts from other pages in order to reply about rules.
With my comment, I was only aiming to affirm how the rules apply to cards like Pithing Needle in the context of competition.
I apologize for not reading any other previous posts. If there is sarcasm involved, like I said, sorry for not reading any other previous posts.

So... White is not allowed to get effects that are in the color pie of other colors... but then Green is allowed to get a better 2 cost anthem? Sylvan Anthem is pretty ridiculous. The lack of a 'non-token' on the scry effect is absolutely nuts on a 2 cost enchantment.
And then a Yawgmoth's Will as well? Gaea's Will is going to be ridiculous. The suspend 4 is certainly a decent warning clock, but I highly expect this card to be cheated out in a variety of ways as well.
Both of these cards make sense in green, as they are effects that green has... However there is no reason why green should have an anthem that is better and more efficient than White, which is the primary anthem color, or have a Yawgmoth Will effect that broad. Green's Regrowth effects typically require items to be returned to hand - to be cast again in the future - and typically at significant cost for more items...
I am unhappy with this direction.

I'm no bomb first pick in a booster draft when it comes to playing Magic, but I do appreciate the informal nature of these supplementary products, and I'm happy to see that the designers are clearly having fun with a lot of these wacky designs.
I can understand why some people that Squirrels are beginning to feel memetic and played out, but these sort of products are the only way new Squirrels can get printed, and this might be their only chance to get a good Squirrel tribal build going; they may not get another chance.
And I appreciate that they finally cemented their secondary color formally in in black-bordered land, since all previous Squirrels were silver-bordered.
Really enjoying the grand tour of the Multiverse too. A little bit of Ravnica, a peek of Alara, etc.

Funny, Antidisestablishmentarianism is about keeping politics and church together, Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar is a chef who cooked for demons using other hellish creatures as ingredient. They are quite alike.

Ertai, Wizard Adept counts as a Wizard.
- Lonis, Cryptozoologist looks cool, I'll try it in Golos, given the high creature count of that deck.
- Obsidian Charmaw goes to the dragon pile for Ur-Dragon, I'm always glad to see more removal printed in dragon form!
- Junk Winder seems really nice for blue token builds.
- Gaea's Will should not have been printed in green (even if the card is probably fine from a power level perspective).
- General Ferrous Rokiric seems like a nice include for Rienne, Angel of Rebirth and Niv-Mizzet Reborn decks.
- Phantasmal Dreadmaw is a cute reference to Phantasmal Dragon. I also like the flavour text.
- Flay Essence made me realize how much black removal has grown in the last years.
- Ignoble Hierarch made me smile.
I love Ignoble Hierarch on every level. Such a win!
I have 68 active EDH decks, with more in progress. I don't consider this a problem. Do you?

Going to Calibrated Blast some people to death for sure. They're printing all the fun toys for High CMC.
Ignoble Hierarch is going straight into my 1cc Golos Storm deck.

Piru, The Volatile looks interesting. I really like that they managed to make the traditional elder dragon upkeep payment a semi-upside, since you can use it to set off her boardwipe on command.

Well Academy Manufacturer might just be my favorite card in the set (which is a high feat with all of the squirrels running about). It's going straight into my Toggo Rakdos & Roll deck and really makes me glad that I held off on getting Curse of Opulence for that deck since it is getting so much more treasure focused that I don't think it is a great fit anymore.
The sort of similar "Gift of the Fae" (which is the current translation, but is already a card name, so...) is neat and I really like its hoop and payoff, just not sure where it belongs.
Lonis, Cryptozoologist is another neat card. I really like them exploring clues and acknowledging that they have three evergreen artifact tokens: Food, Clue and Treasure. Now they just need to officially retire Gold and it will be all good. Plus he is a snake, not a Naga, which is a huge plus in my book.
Piru, the Volatile isn't really my thing, but I appreciate finally giving her a card and having it be an homage to the original elder dragons.

I'm torn on this one. On the one hand, I think Dragon's Rage Channeler on turn one is phenomenal. Turn 2 Signet/talisman or draw spell and you're off to the races. Honestly, I think t1 channeler might match t1 Ponder frequently. Setting up future Underworld Breach and Sevinne's Reclamation nonsense is gravy, and a 3/3 flyer ain't nothing.BeneTleilax wrote: ↑2 years agoDragon's Rage Channeler seems like very strong card filtering for spellslinger decks, and potentially setting up your graveyard is not nothing.
On the other hand, surveil is not draw, this uses a creature slot, and it is a poor late game draw a lot of the time.

So the cycle of common landcyclers: Landscaper Colos Mental Journey World-Weary Battle Plan and Orchard Strider.
I appreciate more basic landcycling, the two-color ones from commander 2016 obviously have deckbuilding limitations, and the old mono-colored ones from Conflux are, in my opinion, quite bad. These new ones seem semi-playable, maybe a bit niche in the case of the green one. But am I imagining things, or has white really gotten shafted compared to the other four here?

Academy Manufacturer made me giggle, it might be good in Treasure decks (I don't think there's enough Clue or Food support to make dedicated decks)
I like Piru, the Volatile, a good homage to the first cycle of Elder Dragons and an interesting twist on the upkeep cost and its implications. To the dragon pile she goes! Seriously though, that's 4 dragons already (not counting the dragon whelp) and the D&D set comes next, this seems like a very good year for dragons!

In a set with Delerium and Flashback, I think Landscaper Colos will overperform people's expectations in limited. A 4/6 body is a great blocker/attacker for 6, and you'll occasionally get a card's worth of value off your ETB.JovialJovian wrote: ↑2 years agoSo the cycle of common landcyclers: Landscaper Colos Mental Journey World-Weary Battle Plan and Orchard Strider.

On one level, more cool dragons is, well, cool. On another, pretty much version of a dragon deck you might want to actually build as dragon tribal already has more good options available than you can possibly include in one deck. Some of these are good enough they might play a role outside dragon tribal, though, and that's where I get interested.

She also has lifelink meaning all the damage dealt is life gain for you as well..Wallycaine wrote: ↑2 years agoPiru, The Volatile looks interesting. I'm trying to brew food, your right not enough cards/supposrt (though this set is really helping) but what makes it work is also putting a focus on artifacts being sacrificed and gaining life.Dragoon wrote: ↑2 years agoAcademy Manufacturer made me giggle, it might be good in Treasure decks (I don't think there's enough Clue or Food support to make dedicated decks)
Academy Manufacturer also is nice as it can give some decks a lil draw and ramp since making measure is very common and I few people who run some clue makers.
“There are no weak Jews. I am descended from those who wrestle angels and kill giants. We were chosen by God. You were chosen by a pathetic little man who can't seem to grow a full mustache"
You meant draw and life right? Since you're already making the Treasures.5colorsrainbow wrote: ↑2 years agoI'm trying to brew food, your right not enough cards/supposrt (though this set is really helping) but what makes it work is also putting a focus on artifacts being sacrificed and gaining life.

I know that some Clue cards are played in the format, but I don't think you can run enough of them to justify running this. I'm still brewing a Breya deck looking to maximize the number of artifacts on the field for cards like Broodstar and Cranial Plating, but I don't know if this can fit in it.

Could it be?! I actually asked Rosewater on Blogatog a while back about the possibility of wedge Elder Dragons and never received a reply.Wallycaine wrote: ↑2 years agoPiru, The Volatile looks interesting. Could we be getting a full cycle of wedge Elder Dragons?!!

Just do it like me: a 75 cards shell containing the lands and the support cards, and 25 random dragons taken from a huge pile of them. No more cuts, play all the dragons
I hope so but I don't think it will be the case. Piru was the sixth Elder Dragon to survive the Elder Dragon wars (she was later killed by Dakkon, exploding in a burst of flames, hence her ability on this card). I don't think other Elder Dragons from that time are particularly known.Sporegorger_Dragon wrote: ↑2 years agoCould it be?! EDIT: Apparently, four others have been named (see post below).

I was going to say Probably not, since only Piru was the remaining survivor of the Elder Dragon War, but it turns out MTG wiki does have 4 more names:Sporegorger_Dragon wrote: ↑2 years agoCould it be?! That, and they did retcon Ugin into the whole thing... so, who knows at this point?Only seven Elder Dragons seem to have actually survived the war. They are the siblings Chromium Rhuell, Arcades Sabboth, Palladia-Mors, Nicol Bolas, Ugin (the latter two are actually twins), their cousins Vaevictis Asmadi, and Piru, Chromium's lover. However, only the five Elder Dragon Legends were remembered as the survivors, because Ugin had become a planeswalker before the war began and never participated, and Piru was largely forgotten after she was killed by Dakkon Blackblade in ages past.[9] Presently, Nicol Bolas and Ugin are the only known Elder Dragons that still live.[10]
An eighth Elder Dragon, Merrevia Sal was killed in ages past, shortly after her "birth". Others were Rubra, Ravus, and Lividus.
