On this day, ten years ago, a legend was born.

Ten years ago I was in college. I had a lot of time on my hands, and I didn't spend much of it on schoolwork. Three years before that, in high school, I joined MTG Salvation at the suggestion of a friend. My second post on that website was my entry into the December 2007 FCC, the precursor to the MCC (The first, of course, was to sign up for that very contest). Side note, take a look at that thread. One hundred and three contestants!

My involvement with CCC&G only grew from there. I was a frequent MCC participant. I have participated in nearly 250 unique threads in that subforum since 2007. Fully sixteen of those threads were variants on "The Winner is Judge" threads. I recall having up to five of those active simultaneously because of the fast-moving nature of the subforum at the time and the delay in judging from people who didn't spend quite as much of their time on the internet as I did. After a few too many threads stalling out because of absent judges… I decided to take matters into my own hands.

On this day, ten years ago, I created MEGIDDO IS JUDGE. It was my first vanity project. Void is already recapping some of the basics, so I'll skip ahead a bit. If you weren't there at the time and were always wondering why in the world this thread is called "Club Flamingo," well, here you go. That's really all there was to it. Believe it or not, it was always intended to be temporary, but it took on its own identity and ultimately infiltrated even my own real life.

I wrote about this briefly two years ago, but my friends from real life know about Club Flamingo. I still get Flamingo-related gifts (most recently a pair of lawn flamingos--yellow and black to match the Pittsburgh Steelers). I get sent Flamingo-related news articles. I've even traveled the country and even internationally to see other Flamingos. I hope to be able to do so again someday. In so many little ways, this slice of the internet has influenced me like nearly nothing else.

But it's not all about me. While I may have been the college student throwing too much time and energy at fake internet games, others saw that energy and reciprocated. Many folks, who I will not name individually but who may feel free to identify themselves, bought into this vision of fun and silly-but-serious custom card creation game participation, and our own community sprung up out of nowhere.

It started with IRC (remember that? We used to have one embedded in MTGS). The #flamingopunk channel was the first time people talked to each other outside of the thread. That grew into an MTGS clan, a Facebook group, and a Skype group. Today a Discord group still lives on with some of the folks who hung on from back then.

This community was really something wild to be a part of back in the day. We concocted a very ambitious project: The CCC&G Pro Tour, a biannual circuit that would combine all of the winners from the MCC, DCC, and CCL as well as the Club Flamingo Monthly Games from a 6-month period into one super-contest that would determine the champion. You know it was a big deal because we had a coveted MTGS trophy as a prize for the winner. We made it through four Pro Tours before they dropped off, which is two years! Looking back, and I refuse to remove my rose-colored glasses for this, I consider this a very impressive fun considering that we were fighting the inevitable loss of Forums as internet discussion as things shifted hard to Reddit and Twitter. That said, I know that I lost the fire around then. I haven't really been actively involved in the community other than recently on Nexus in the very limited capacity as a poster in this very thread, the revival of Club Flamingo.

I mentioned the Club Flamingo Monthly Games there. The MCC, DCC, and CCL still live here on Nexus, but the CFGs did not carry over. Until now.

The very first CFG we ever ran was called The Battle Factory. Based around a feature from Pokemon Emerald, this game attempted to translate the random team and swapping mechanics from that challenge into custom card creation. It was the kickoff to the CCC&G Pro Tour circuit, and to me really represented when Club Flamingo transitioned from being just a group of people hanging out into being a group that Did Stuff.

Today, to celebrate Club Flamingo's tenth anniversary, I will be posting a revival of the Battle Factory, with slightly revised rules. I hope you will all participate. Eight years ago, I did suggest we might run it again. So I'm just keeping my promise.

Ten years later, I'm not in college and I have a lot less time on my hands, but I still dedicate some of it to designing custom Magic cards. I'm glad to have had this as part of my life for as long as it has been, and I hope it's brought you even a fraction of the joy it's brought me.

LOVE

I still remember the night I stayed up until 7am designing the initial incarnation of the CCC&G PT. wild times. A lot's changed for many of us but it's impressive that we've been able to sustain a community that doesn't really relate all that much to Magic anymore.

thanks for all the memes and fun times!

Anniversary retrospective post #2: Thread size, the leaderboard, and "control of CCC&G"

Megiddo himself has covered a lot of the important emotional stuff so far, but this is Club Flamingo: no posts in this thread are actually serious. So with the touchy feels probably sticking with me all day behind us, let's look at how CF has influenced the custom card community.

The obvious metric is sheer size. At press time, the Club Flamingo motherthread on Salvation has 55,485 replies (and this is down by close to ten thousand from the peak number due to mandatory deletions for EU law) and 2,540,991 views, both of which dwarf anything else going on the subforum, most of MTGSalvation, and most internet forums in general. The equivalent of entire posting careers have been made on Club Flamingo:

Image

That leaderboard, by the way, has been important to Flamingos for a long time. Megiddo's retrospective post in the long-dormant original thread says it all. We were proud of moving up that ranking, but everybody - I dare say even Megiddo - knew there was no chance of catching Chemtrails, a paragon of this community and (foreshadowing!) one of the true Flamingo Gods.

Anniversary retrospective post #3: Some miscellaneous Flamingo projects

Just being a very big thread wasn't all that Club Flamingo was about, although it figured into the loose ideology that developed around the Club (foreshadowing again!) - something remarkable about the atmosphere in those heady early and middle days of the thread was the sheer ambition of the collective membership. For all of the %$#%, goofing off, memes, and occasional spats, there was a dizzying array of attempts to make Magic more fun dammit:

- Hobo Magic, a format pioneered by mellifluoresce among others featuring no mana.

- The Failcube

- Core Flamingo

- The Magic Wars, not a Flamingo-initiated project but certainly one popularized by the group - the most colossally high-effort CCC&G game of all time in which players guided a custom creature type through a planewide war. A Flamingo team was put together and the IRC planning sessions were the stuff of legend. (One day, I'll run this again as well - it's a bit like the Battle Factory, in that way, except with being less, uh, actual.)

- The aforementioned Pro Tour

- A total CCC coup - Wait, it would be bad if all of this forum was under the thumb of one small, insular group. Thankfully, the days of single-party-state Flamingo dominance are over and Nexus Custom Cards is controlled solely by checks notes me.

Anniversary retrospective post #4: So what is this thing really about?

A small handful of loose ideals have, in my view, defined the Club Flamingo experience from its heyday until today.

- The Ideal of ++: Increasing the size of the thread and increasing one's own post count are worthy goals. Spam within Club Flamingo is something that mods have always turned a blind eye to. The Club encourages posts that would be spammy elsewhere as long as they're in the service of fun.

- The Ideal of Creativity: This is a custom card game at the end of the day, after all. There's always an active challenge one way or another. Thinking hard and using your best creativity tempered by good design and development instincts is also an essential Flamingo task.

- The Ideal of Nonseriousness: No matter what anyone says on any topic in this thread, don't take it to heart. The Club is a place of escapism. Weighty matters should be lifted from your shoulders here. The Internet's finest Japanese gay bar is all about relaxation, enjoyment, and feeling better, not worries, grudges, or pain.
Psst, check the second page of Custom Card Contests & Games! Because of the daily contests, a lot of games fall down to there.

Anniversary retrospective post #5: Some Flamingos of note

At the end of the day Club Flamingo has been about the people. So it's only right to make mention of a few users who each played a large part in shaping the identity of the Club and the experiences we all had therein. This is by no means an exhaustive list - the Gods of Club Flamingo are many - but all of these people definitely deserve this shoutout.

- Megiddo, God of All Things
We wouldn't be here without you, Imperator. Megiddo's cranky dictator persona is iconic but we all know and love him as the amazing friend and collaborator he was and is to us.

- Chemtrails, God of the Sea
The former CrustaceanCrusader's contributions are as wide as the ocean. As the all-time top MTGSalvation version Club Flamingo poster and owner of a stunningly large win total in the actual competition portion of the thread, you could say that Chemtrails has done more to shape the life of Flamingodom than anyone except Megiddo himself.

- avatarz, God of Food
avatarz's idiosyncratic but well-balanced and flavorful designs have earned him many high marks, and his banter is also legendary, but no one will ever forget his tendency to judge "after lunch" only to delay for 8 hours, 12 hours, or even days. "Italian lunchtime" has entered into the lexicon as meaning an indeterminately long time.

- Jiggernuts, God of Animals
Jiggernuts was - supposedly - a ten-year-old South Korean child with not too great of a grasp of English, a love of blue text, and an obsession with designing cards based on farm animals and vanilla 1/1s. The magic and innocence in his heart brought many good times to the club until it was discovered Jiggernuts was actually a gimmick account of troll, lolcow, and banned MTGS user Brofaux. (When are we doing "banned MTGS users" as a challenge for real, anyway)

- pressingchess, God of Chaos
pressingchess is difficult to explain. To this day I'm not entirely sure whether this account was a spambot using randomly-generated text to produce card designs. pressingchess's posts looked like Alex Churchill's ToothyCat or RoboRosewater designs, only less coherent. Although pressingchess's legend is well-known, the account was short-lived: It was banned for, well, spam.

Wow. It's been 10 years. My life has also changed a lot since this trip started. I know I've not been the most consistent of members (mostly because of my job), but this is a place I definitely want to come back all the time.

Happy ten years, Club Flamingo! Thanks for the joy, Meggido!

Current challenge is still "China made a new gacha game for weebs where all the units are cute anime characters dressed up as famous artifacts from Magic: The Gathering. Who's your favourite character?"

Never change, CF. I think I'll have one more thing to say in the morning, but we ought to get back to our regularly scheduled programming for NinjaCaterpie to judge.

Let's make some memories to talk about for the 20th Flamingoversary bash.

Ah, memories. I kinda wish I could find anything we'd done on Core Flamingo again. (Considering that this place is built on phpBB, I can honestly say that, in some small way, it is totally not a bastard child of the Failcube reborn to wreak havoc on the multiverse definitely better than vBulletin.)

Um. Genshin Impact: The CCG cards is the challenge? :shhh:

Chloe, Wayfarer's Guide
Artifact Creature - Druid (C)

At the beginning of your end step, if three or more basic lands entered the battlefield under your control this turn, return Chloe from your graveyard to your hand.

Hi Martha! It turns out that almost no-one in the Club is cishet anymore, but it's still definitely not the gay bar.

Other historical gems that come to mind are:
  • #15K - what sweet summer children we were when 15K posts seemed like an incredible feat. I became one of the rare people to receive an warning for spamming Club Flamingo during this time.
  • CF Gerrymanders the Forum Awards - concluding with what finer result than establishing Gerrard's Mom as Funniest Poster.
  • Club Flamingo Mafia - One of the worst played social deduction games known to humankind.
  • Disappointing Signet - Users from across the forum would frolick to Disappointing Signet Inc. and commission avatars and signature banners alike of simultaneously the highest and lowest quality. Purveyed by Chemtrails, avatarz and myself with the occasional DSI x MEGIDDO collaboration.

I'm moved that you still use that disappointing combo I made :foil:

Miriette, the Vengeful Wish 1UR
Legendary Creature — Wizard Advisor (R)
Flying, haste
Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, you may pay {3}. If you do, copy that spell. You may choose new targets for the copy.
Whenever you cast or copy a noncreature spell, Miriette gets +1/+1 until end of turn.

Darkstrix Devotee 1B
Creature — Human Wizard {R}
<Gacha—Five Stars>
Your deck can only contain one <Five Star> card named Darkstrix Devotee.
At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, if that player has seven or more cards in hand, Darkstrix Devotee deals 4 damage to that player.
2/2

Darkstrix Devotee 1B
Creature — Human Wizard {U}
<Gacha—One Star>
At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, if that player has seven or more cards in hand, Darkstrix Devotee deals 1 damage to that player.
2/1

(Imagine this as a frame treatment — the stars are represented visually, and the reminder text only appears on the rare one. The idea is you can run the one star cards as normal, up to 4 per deck, while you can only put one of the five star. If you do that, you could run at most three one star cards to total 4. For simplicity... we only have five and one star for now.)

IIW: Cards using the Historic batching word.
